Hello all, I got my baby macaw Clive about a month ago, he is 5 months old and last week I started to notice what looked like a blue spot on his beak I figured it was from his toys. But then I started to notice more over the next fewdays.I called my avian vet and set up an appointment for this Saturday but I’m real nervous. I’ve never seen anything like it and was hoping maybe someone on here has maybe been through this before. Any help is appreciated, thank you.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome to you and Clive, thanks for joining!

I took a look at numerous scarlet macaw beaks online and found many beak base color variations. Not exactly a bluish hue though, so good idea to consult with an avian vet. Perhaps related to maturation at such an early age?

Hopefully nothing of concern, please keep us updated with results!

I wonder if it could just be the blood vessels showing through his slightly transparent beak? You're doing exactly the right thing getting him in to a vet so quickly. Don't worry, this time next week you might have that slightly embarrassed over-reaction feeling after being reassured it's completely normal :)

I have two 7 month-old male Scarlet Macaw siblings, Scottie & Louie. When Scottie was about 4 months-old I noticed the exact same blueish-transluscent areas on his beak and I was very concerned so I texted pics of his beak to Dr. Susan Clubb, DVM who is an avian specialist vet in FL. She thought that it looked like some minor bruising and I didn't think anything of it beyond that point, other than to keep an eye on things. Louie never had these shaded areas nor did my previous female named Scarlett, whom I belonged to for her entire 36-year lifespan since 1984. Well, turns out that eventually, the areas disappeared and everything is back to normal. So, based upon my own personal experience and observations with this, I would say that you have absolutely nothing to worry about and that by now, I wouldn't be surprised if those areas are probably gone from Clive's beak. Hope that this was helpful.

Yellow Shoulder Amazon, Salty
While not a macaw, my Salty , a yellow shoulder amazon, has that bluish haze on the base of his lower mandible. Our CAV says not to worry. Salty's had it all of his 6 years.

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
Yep. Young macs are clumsy and uncoordinated and bonk themselves all the time. Looks like a bruise to me too. Keeled over onto her face.

It happens.
