I am wondering if anyone has done this before or can give me some tips. We have a macaw and are buliding an outdoor aviary for her. We already had a dog kenel 10x10x10 that had a roof frame. We finished the top with chain link fence just like the 10x10x10 has. However, we really didnt think it all the way through. I am trying to use what we have since budget is very tight. We live in a neighborhood but it is fully wooded. Therefore snakes, mice, and other wildlife are an issue. Although she would never stay in here at night it would only be in the day we cant take a chance for something to get her. So instead of buliding something new can we put some type of metal on the outside to keep the critters out? Also we are not able to attach any perches b/c the spacing is so large on the 10x10x10. Thanks for you help:red1:

Smash, There are many things you must be careful about here. Critters are one thing. Outside Aviary are great but only if they are built safe and are made out of materials that are bird safe. The chain link fence you are talking about should be stainless steel. Regular fencing has dangers, the finish on them are harmful to birds. The dropping of other bird flying over the Aviary unless it is fully covered can also cause hard or spread illness if your macaw comes in contact with it. If the Aviary is built on grass or dirt floor, snakes, rats, mice can dig into the avairy from the outside and into the Aviary so concrete needs to be the base of the flooring. Shade too is needed, some Macaws can get over heated if left in sunlight. I would never leave the Macaw by it's self alone. Best of luck and once your project is completed, we would love to see pictures. Joe

Yea wouldn't use dog pen as the steel is usually galvanised which is bad for birds

Thank you for the help. Even if the fence has been aged? I heard somewhere that aged is ok. If it had been in weather a long time. This one has been for over 7yrs. Our yard has a tone of shade as it is fully wooded on all sides of course if really really hot she would not go outside.
