I noticed it this morning as I was feeding him breakfast. On both sides of his lower mandible, he's got a sliver of beak that's peeling back.

I've read that this could be diet related and for about a week after the storms and everything was so chaotic he was eating mostly wild bird seeds, nuts and any fruit I could get my hands on. I got a bag of large parrot food (I was told its a hook billed bird mix.) which contains pellets, seeds, nuts and fruit but I'm wondering, is this the wrong food for him?

Is it the stress that's causing his beak to peel?

He won't come out of his cage at all now. I've tried everything I can think of. I've bribed him with treats. I've opened the door and stepped back to let him do it on his own terms. I've talked to him and sang to him and I even got a female friend to open the door for him since he usually likes to flirt with ladies.

Nothing.

He just cringes back against the back of his cage.

When I leave the room he chirps and beeps and honks and makes noises just like he always did. If I'm on the phone he'll raise a fuss because I'm not talking TO him. And if I stand there and talk to him with the cage door closed he's fine as well.

My poor baby boy. I don't know what to do for him.

Did the storm directly effect your house? He could be reacting to your stress, I know that my husband & I can't even argue w/o Merlin reacting. I can't believe that a bad diet for a week could already be showing, Merlins beak peels, I've seen alot of bird pictures w/peeling beaks. I wonder if its diet related. He feels safe in his cage, when he feels safe again he will come out.

I had moved into a trailer park temporarily while I was looking for a house and it just so happens that the tornadoes (two of them in one night) came past the trailer park. You could see them through the window next to Hannibal's cage.

I was told I could not bring him to the storm shelter so I stayed here with him. Ever since that night he's been afraid of me, afraid of everything. He's slowly coming around. He acts curious and friendly towards my female friends and my niece.

I am stressed out and he may be reacting to that. Thats another reason I'm trying to find him a new home rather than just foster him for awhile. There are so many factors at work here.

I just worried about the beak peeling. I was afraid it was a symptom of some horrible thing. It doesn't seem to bother him though. So I guess I'll chill now. Thanks!

7 Year old SI Eclectus named Guapo, I have a 6 year old GW Macaw named Neleno
This is normal, If he is a chewer, the GW beaks can peels and even flakes off in spots. My Neleno is a chewer and after finishing off a log or two, his beak looks as if he was punched.lol. I have to take a finger nail file and file his beak so it's level again or smooth it out. Sometimes i even scratch his beak to remove the flakes.
If he is not a chewer, then this could be stress. Also check to see if he is biting the sides of the cage, this too can really tear up their beaks. Best of luck Joe

He constantly gnaws on his cage bars. I guess that's probably it.

The peeling is normal. All parrot beaks peel and flake, as long as it's not cracked you all should be fine.

The poor little guy is probably a little traumatized. Violent storms can be scary and tornados are terrifying. As stated above, parrots are very empathetic and know when a member of their flock is upset or nervous.

I wish I could help. Are you still wanting to rehome him?
