I have a medium sized Avitor harness that I got from one of our fine members quiet sometime ago for Jonesy the 'too but he never got a chance to wear it ;-(
It's too large for BB and too small for Amy so I'd gladly trade it for one suitable Amazon toy and one suitable Cockatiel toy to anyone interested.
the previous owner never used it either. comes with leash and instructional dvd :D

Being in Canada it would probably cost us too much to ship things to each other, but I am curious to ask you about the size of your harness. You said it's too small for Amy who is a BFA, right? May I ask you how much Amy weighs? I also have a BFA, and I am considering getting one of these for him, but was trying to figure out the size I should get. It says small for a BFA on their fitting guide, but you are saying the medium is too small for Amy! I'm confused as to which size I should go for.

Sunny a female B&G macaw;
Japie (m) & Appie (f), both are congo african grey;
All are rescues- had to leave their previous homes for 'reasons', are still in contact with them :)
The size is linked to the weight of the bird (there is a sizechart on their website).

I contacted them once about Sunny -who was 1000 grams at that time (just came to live here); so exactly in between sizes (the L and XL) and they told me: for comfort and training: go larger, if already used to aviator and comfortable with it and you want the extra-extra security-try the smaller option.
I went with "comfy" (because with her busted wings it is unlikely she will ever fly at all, so they are more a safetybelt anyway) and *she* went to gain 1/4 kilo extra weight by getting more active and building muscles!

So if your bird is not flighted yet... do not forget about the extra muscle-weight they will put on!

Last weigh-in at his CAV he weighed 548g's:eek: Waayyyyy too big! His "normal"weight is between 484 and 505. He has been on a diet since he was also discovered to have heart issues ( a partially blocked artery!) I just ordered a scale yesterday from Amazon to keep a digalant record for him and BB. During our shower yesterday he felt "lighter"

The harness is marked "Medium". The previous owner got it for his large 'too.

Umbrella Cockatoo- 15? years old..I think?
I was convinced mine had lost weight and it turned out she had actually gained weight. I was very shocked, so I think a scale is your best bet. Also, remember that a full crop is going to add a significant amount of weight onto such a light creature...as will un-passed poop lol.

Also- I really wish I had gone up a size when buying mine. The harness has to touch the sides of my Too's face (like a turtleneck) and she DOES NOT like that. I have read that other people have had better luck using a slightly larger harness when training etc.

Yes, I saw the size chart with the weights. I just felt that a small may be too small for my BFA who would fall in the small category. I feel like medium may be more suitable, but according to the charts he's too small for a medium. Oh well. Not sure which one I'll end up getting. Thanks everyone for your input.

I think the head hole is the most important part really..the rest is pretty adjustable (unless I am overlooking something).

I also have a small avitor harness and I don’t think I’m ever going to be able to put this on my Caique. The first time I tried, which was after trying to get her aquatinted with it. I hung it up in his cage for a few days and all that they recommend that you do first. But then when I went to put it on him I think it was too soon because he did not like it at all! And he kept trying to get away so I couldn’t get the darn thing off of him. He was very upset, to say the least. So I decided to wait a while, like a few months and I tried it again because I wanted to be able to take him outside this summer and not have to have him put ina cage. But that didn’t work either. Does anyone know if there is something else I could put on him that he won’t struggle to get out of? Any suggestions?? Like clothing???
Thank you,
Lori W

You have to also get them to step on the harness, so they learn it not a threat. Yes seeing it for a few days by hanging it near cage help so can get it close with them not flying off of the sight of it, but they also have to touch it and step on it, before you attempt to loop it on them. Otherwise they will get angry, or fly away from it and then have to start training all over again.

Don't use the flight suilts/diaper, as can cause issues and don't want you bird holding it to long. Just potty train the bird, only took me a week to potty train my U2's and they know to wait to get out of car to go poo, climb down arm and go poo, or right before going into a store, or out, or inside home they walk to side of cage, or corner to go poo when they need to, or on command. Outside they usually go when on tree, or anywhere if they decide to, but they seem to prefer the tree, as they do side of the cage for some reason.

Shockingly even with the busted wings muscles of Randy the macaw, she can still fly at times, just not as nearly as high as my U2's
