3 Quakers, a Green Cheek Conure and a Cherry Headed Conure
Hi, my name is Kevin but I go by KevKaos on forums. My wife and I have three Quaker parrots and as of yesterday, a new Green Cheek Conure. I am looking for a Cherry Headed Conure now, and that will be the end of our flock. I used to have a Cherry Headed Conure years ago but had to find her a new home when I went through a divorce and had to move into an apartment. She was a wonderful bird and I hated to give her up, but she went to a wonderful new home, and apparently she fell in love with one of the daughters and has been very happy.

I will be brushing up on the information I may need and forgotten over the years on raising a Cherry Head. I was looking for a forum specific to the breed, like I belong to for Quakers, but I wasn't having much luck. Happy to be here though.

Came back to edit so I could add a photo of Rico. I added this on the wrong message, so it is in a later message as well.

Welcome! I don't know anything about Cherry heads, but I am sure there are people here that will be able to help you out. :)

I guess I should have updated sooner than now, but here's the update. I found my cherry head. He was in Texas and is 7 months old, more like 8 months now. The breeder I got him from got him from a friend of hers that had him and was apparently somewhat afraid of him. They had to use a towel to get him out of his cage, and as such it seems he was left in his cage a lot and was somewhat turning feral. Ok, hes my project bird. Still not sure if he will ever be as loving as my past cherry head, but we are slowly making headway. I have yet had to, and do not intent to use a towel to handle him. Don't need to now anyway. He doesn't trust me enough to come out of his cage and step up for me, but if I open the larger door and put my hand inside, he will very quickly step up. Not sure if he is stepping up because he wants to, or because he is intimidated by me. I don't want him to be intimidated and scared, so I am slowly trying to gain his trust. It seems to be working. He has times where he seems to like sitting on my shoulder, and other times that he doesnt want much to do with me. I am using part of Chet Womachs method of taming, in which I let Rico see that he has some free will about whether he is social with me or not. If he is on his boing playing, and comes around near me, I will offer my finger and ask if he wants to step up. Most times he does not, but then there are times that he does. I know that I can force the issue if I need to, bit I can see that I am getting through to him slowly. At least I don't have a biting problem. He's still a lot of fun to have around, and he loves my wife's GCC. They like to preen each other when allowed to have them out together. I limit that though because I don't want the Cherry to bond to closely to the GCC? Anyway, slow and steady steps with this one and hope that everything works out. I am happy to have him.

I came back to put a photo in of Rico.
