i just bought a cockatoo 10 hours after we landed from a month long vacation.after seeing my mother in laws collection of large birds, including macaws, parrots, conures ,eagles, exotic owls, lovebirds, cockatiels, parakeets and mynah my favorite but its difficult to find a mynah in california soafter reading a alot about it i found out that the less demanding cockatoo is a umbrella.he is a 3 years old tame, hand feed, gentle and bought from a respected dealer which is also my saltwater fish and corals dealer.so its worth the extra money...

hoping to learn a lot about this wonderful creatures!

I have to admit that you should have done research and found out the bad times a bird may have along with their needs before you bought her. Of course though, now that you have her and your here, if anything goes wrong or you haveany questions, ask around here. There's always someone who will be able to help you out. Also, watch that it doesent get near any electrical cords, cockatoos absolutely LOVE to chew on cords for some reason, and it would not be good for her to get hurt. Just a tip for you.

Umbrella's are very affectionate, but they are also quite LOUD! If you didn't know this before, you soon will. As long as you can tollerate the loud screams of an Umbrella Cockatoo, you will have a really sweet loving companion for the rest of your life. Also need a big cage with a really good locking system. Cockatoos are smart and will figure out how to get out of their cage if not very careful and when they do, they will destroy your house.

Bullit,

I would caution you against letting a parrot on your shoulder, especially one you don't know very well, and especially one with the crushing power of an Umbrella Cockatoo.

I'll say it again...why do you think pirates are always depicted wearing an eyepatch? ;)

He could be sweet now, but large birds and shoulders dont seem to mix well to me. A bird might not always bite with the intent to hurt, but an injury is quite possibly when you allow him on your shoulders. Like for instance, birds will bite their companions when there is danger around. They do no intend to hurt their companion. The logic behind it is that when a bird sees danger and bites his companion, he believes he is saving his companion by prompting him to fly away. Here is a good article for reasons why birds bite. I hope you will read it Why Parrots Bite . You might also want to start look up training as it is important to train a bird to help it bond with you and your family and to help deal with behavioral issues as they come. rust me all birds have their quirks, and its up to us to know as much as possible to be able to help them through them.
