Training/Taming Resource

As a new parrot (conure) owner, I want to make sure that I do the right things when getting to know my bird. What are you favorite resources for taming/training?

Does anyone have opinions about the training videos that are available for purchase online?

I personally have not purchased any videos or used online resources. If I have any questions I prefer asking around on a board like this, after-all who knows better then fellow bird owners? I have heard that the click training works wonders, so that is one you might want to check out.

I'd also say, do not invest money in any of those things. Many of them are just a rip off, but even the ones that are good can be found for free.

If you find a (skilled and qualified) trainer in your area a good pet training class can be something very worth investing in, but for books and videos there's this wonderful place called a library

I once took a look at a dog training book - to see what was out there as I was running a pet training business. I went to the "chapter" on teaching a dog to sit. It was two pages with lots of nice pictures of happy dogs sitting with only one line of instruction: "Tell your dog to 'sit' in a firm voice. When he does, give him a reward."

?!!?!?!?!? If that works your dog already knew how to sit!

While that is one of the worst training books I have ever seen, most are only slightly better.

Often they are dressed up with and couched in a bunch of foofy language about building a relationship, and trust, etc etc. Important points no doubt - but there are no actual *instructions* anywhere to be found.

Its a bit like a users manual for a DVD player that has ten pages on how much you'll love watching movies, and describing all the different genres of movies .... but it never tell you how to use your dvd player.
