scarlet macaws and amazons bad rap

is it just me or do scarlet macaws and amazons get an undeserved bad reputation?

You are right they usually do, but I believe it is the owners of these birds that cause them to get that reputation. So many people get their birds with great intentions, and no knowledge of how these birds truly behave. Others get a parrot like a macaw or a zon, because they want a bird that talks and that is all they care about. It is truly important to educate yourself about the birds we want BEFORE purchasing one, they are not toys with voice boxes, and once people figure this out, hence the coming of the bad reputation. But you can not blame the bird for behaving like...well...a bird, it is our responsibility to make sure our birds are well cared for (which is not always easy) and most important healthy, and also entertained.
Honestly though these breeds are some of the most knowledgeable and loveable parrots, and can be wonderful companions if the time is taken to prepare for their arrival, and then the time is taken to spend with them. they are not just pets to be fed once a day and looked at. They need enrichment, training, and most of all, they need to trust their owners and their home.
I am no bird professional by any means, but it is quite obvious that these animals are not just an ordinary pet you feed and forget about, like most people that own cats and dogs do, they are feathered 3 year old children, that need love, guidance and proper care. If people dont have the time or energy to do this for their fids, then one they shouldn't own one, and two: they are just fostering all the bad behavior that gets these birds their reputation.

Of course, there are the hot 3 amazons that have a different reputation, but even those birds are great companions if the time is taken to learn about them and their psychology.

IMHO, all people who want to own parrots should be made to take some kind of class before they get their birds, I really think this would benefit the bird being brought home, I think it would help the new owners have a much better relationship with their fids, I think it would cut down on the amount of rescues out there, and I think it would start to limit the negative reputation some parrots have. But that is just me and my weird ideas.

i couldnt agree more, especially with taking a class, this is a little unrelated, but i want a doberman pinscher so i am going to take dog obedience classes before hand, locate dog parks, agility parks, obedience classes and all that before getting one so im prepared. i think before anyone gets a parrot they should get a big cage to take up space, dump seed and water on the floor, fling fruit on the walls, blast a bull horn at least twice a day, and buy toys every month, so they know what there getting into, then take home there wonderful fid and give him/her all the love in the world, and with a friend like that, all the mess and work will be nothing compared to the loving loyal featherd child they have

I am a big fan of Amazons, and I do think that the bad reputation they have is undeserved. My own experience with an Amazon was rarely anything but positive. I haven't known any Scarlet Macaws that well, and have never lived with one, but most large Macaws I have met have been friendly and gentle.

I totally agree with CNYGUY, I can only say positive things. I adore Amazons and I cannot understand why they have this reputation ?

me neither there such amazing birds, like vedwed said its the cruel owners that make them this way. i hate to say it but i used to beleive thebad reputation untill i learned more anout them and came to the forum with all the wonderful zon owners, now in the distant future, i am considering getting a lilac crowned zon. i think they are wonderful birds, if only more people saw that
