4-month old male Eclectus Behaviors

I have had a few birds but got them all as older birds. When I lost my last parrot, I got a baby male Eclectus. I am concerned about my new baby - he is not showing any personality. Is this normal in a baby? He responds to some music/singing and loves his food (eats his fruits, veggies, beans, pellet and seed - he is a little piggy). He was stepping up very well when I got him two weeks ago and is now not doing this willingly and has started showing signs of biting.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

hey there i have a female and she took a long time to start showing her personality, she is about 2 and a half now and has started talking a lot more in the past few months, she has a very demanding bossy personality but also very loving towards my husband, we found they try you to test the boundaries to see what they can get away with, also you have to remember they are classed as juvenile until they are 3, we find ignoring bad behaviour works the best, sometimes thats nearly all day lol nah just joking, hope this helps you with your question

Re: 4-month old male Eclectus Behaviors

I don't believe they test boundaries when they have only been in their new homes for 2 weeks. I think new owners don't take the time to get to know their new baby & tend to move a little to fast for the birds liking. If the bird is reluctant to step up & is lunging he is warning you to leave him be. If you don't get the message then yes he will bite you. This is the time to take a step or two back & take note of what your bird is trying to tell you. I know i am always harping on trust but i am such a believer in building trust with a parrot before anything else. If your bird doesn't trust you how can you start any form of training.

I also have the same problem with some of my babies. For some reason some go through this I'am scared of everything stage. If handled correctly it will quickly pass. You may even have to resort to just leaving him in the cage & just play tickling games with him. Any resistance on the birds part stop & let him be, come back later & have another go.

There isn't anything unusual about his personality, eclectus are just like that. I would say they like to think about a situation before they act on it. If you watch your bird's actions when you are talking to it, they really are listening.

So my advice would be to take things very slow. You can't make an eclectus do what it doesn't want to do.
