hello people! ive an alexandrine parrakeet, that was given to me about ayear ago,and i have to say that it is a great pleasure to own her.she mainly has the place to herself, she has a cage, and but sleeps in an old guitar.. it didnt take her long to accept me (she gave me a good nip at first tho!)and she loves being handled, and gets on fine with my little dog.i think shes about 5 now and shes called 'sweet green thing'.i give her salad foods, apples, sunflower and seems content,BUT........
THERES an aspect to her behaviour that id like to understand as i cant seem to find any reference points.it goes like this:every couple of weeks, she becomes flightless, fluffs herself up.closes her eyes, and seems 'drunk'and i notice very slight fluttering of her wings, and she comes to ground,i presume because she cant balance when like this.ijust hold her or put her in the towel.the next day, shes as lively, vocal and alert as usual?
is this to do with moulting,or breeding behaviour?or is it dietry
can someone have a similar problem,if it IS a problem??
i looke forward to any answers 'so thanks for reading, and im pleased to find this forum....thanks
AME panic over folks sweet green thing has just laid an egg .........took her to the vets this morning he told me she might be having a fit n prescribed me money loads of drugs....that are exelenty BENEFICIAL so I'm grateful for anything to make 'SG's' life better.I would also like to review her DIET,as I'm sure I could do better.does anyone have any good diet plans for this species?she's only really had parrot mixes, and I've introduced more greens, fruit, she loves apple,grape,orange....seems better today. I held her all night, trouble is,I could be OVER bonding,...!if there's no significant improvement by tomorro,I'll be back to the vets.....I hope its not neuro tho.....any of your ideas would be grand,ok? Thanks. EaMe

Welcome to the forum! I'm sorry to say that it sounds neurological. It may even be a seizure. My Grey has been having seizures recently. I strongly urge you to take her to an avian vet for evaluation.

Hi, From your description I thought of a siezure before I got to the comment by your vet. We have one black masked lovebird that has siezures for the last five or seven years and is perfectly normal in between. In supervised captivity your bird will probably be OK if you find no better answer. We have three alex and each has slightly different likes. They always have water and pellets. Allmost every time I walk past they get, a nut, piece of cookie, a piece of cheese or any high protien food that I have been eating. They know who gives and who doesn't so they never beg from my wife so take care how you feed them. I have been cautioned not to give chocolate onion or avacado otherwise being omniverus they should metabalize small amounts of any food we eat., D.D.
