"Pollo" Golden Conure
Hi. We came across a Golden Conure today in a parking lot a few blocks from my house. It looked a bit stressed out there with cars rolling by so we rescued it and brought it home. It's very friendly and has already captured our hearts. We are trying to locate the owner but if we are unable to, we hope to keep it. It has a leg band and we have been searching the internet trying to ID the breeder but no luck so far. We will also be asking out vet to scan it for a microchip. In our search we have come across plenty of people who want the bird so we are trying to be very careful that it only gets back to the original owner. It's an awesome bird but it's someone's baby... It's safe and comfortable for now and seems happy to be inside. A Golden Conure... How cool is that? :orange:

If there is no microchip, make sure you don't mention the birds ring number. If the owner comes forward ask for the ring number and any kind of 'individual' behavior/markings the bird has.

Thanks for taking him in however, good luck with your search/new bird! :)

Wow! What are the chances of just finding a golden conure?! You did such a great thing by rescuing him. Hopefully you can locate the owner, but if not I'm sure you'll provide him with a great home!

Is it a golden conure or a sun conure? It seems very strange that someone would loose such a rare and expensive bird and not have flyers out everywhere looking for him.

Post flyers, ads in the newspaper, craiglist, etc. Just make sure you put "found bird" and make the person give a description to avoid scammers. Best of luck finding the owner, I'm sure somebody somewhere is heartbroken.

You would be surprised. My wife was in the Pet Supermarket store a couple of weeks ago and was standing in line at the register behind a lady who was a bit upset. She asked the cashier I she could leave a couple of birds at the store if they would take them. They asked her what kind of birds and she replied that they were supposed to be Conures. The manager came over and told her NO, they didn't take in strange birds, it was against store policy.

She asked if it would be OK if she just turned the birds loose. The manager told her that she could do what ever she wanted with her birds. She said that she tried giving them away, but they were brought back to her after a day or two because they were too noisy. She said that she was at her wits end. My wife told her to check on line for a rescue shelter to a local animal shelter would take them in and that it would be irresponsible to just turn birds loose in the wild that aren't a native species nor would the bird be able to fend for itself.

I don't know what happened to the birds or the lady. But this just goes to show you that some people will do anything to get rid of an irresponsible decision that they made by getting an animal they have no clue how to care for. If the found bird is a Sun Conure, I can guess that this could be the case because they are a noisy species.

By the way, my wife was glad that I wasn't the one who went to the Pet store in stead of her because I would have been coming home with a pair of birds.

That's just horrible, how can you not only work at, but manage, a pet store and suggest to people that it's okay to release a captive bred, non indigenous parrot into the wild?! I hope she found homes for them. :(

There have been days where I though about letting my birds out haha:54:....I can't imagine actually doing it. Where I am it would be the same as shutting them in a freezer.

Thanks for all the replys. It's definately a Golden, not a Sun. It's only been less than a day and a half since we found it and no owner yet. I'm trying to figure out how to post a pic on this thread. Any help is appreciated.

See the 7th icon next to bold, italics and underline? It allows you to take image URL from the web and post it into the thread. I use flicker, but you can also use your image gallery on the forum :)

Here's a golden conure and a sun conure, pretty similar but also very very different and hard to mistake for each other if you know parrots. It's amazing you found a golden conure, they are beautiful and rare(which means expensive lol). I hope your able to find the owner :(

If this doesn't post right, I at least got it to post in the image gallery under Conures.

Well, bless my soul! I had to see it to believe it! What is the bird's personality like?

Holy cow, you did find a golden! I sure hope you find the owner if he has one. If you can't find an owner do you plan to keep him?

If I were you I'd go buy a lottery ticket! Maybe lightning does strike twice?;)

It seems to enjoy people but I don't think it was handled alot. It will come up and take food from your hand but won't get on your finger or arm. I wondered how we were going to get it in my truck. It freely walked over to the truck (followed us) without coaxing, lol. It likes to look in the mirror. Likes to do tricks. All in all, very enjoyable!

I was worried about him getting hit by a car or caught by a cat but really surprised no owner yet. Cool birdy!

Funny you should mention the lottery ticket. Went out yesterday and bought some with the same thought!

If we can't find the owner we will keep it. We found the only vet in town that sees birds and they said they will scan the bird for free to see if it has a chip. Hope to get in there tomorrow.

So, update... took it to the vet yesterday... I should have called first because the vet that sees birds wasn't in but the staff scanned it and did not find a microchip. They gave me documentation that it was scanned and wrote down the band number for the bird doc. If the bird has previously been to this vet, the doc will call me back. Like I said earlier, this is the only one that sees birds in my city. They also said that the vet may be able to help identify the breeder. Then the staff said if we wanted to bring it back that the vet could tell us what kind of bird it was. I said, "Oh, I know what kind of bird it is!" They wrote down that info too... All in all, they thought the bird looked healthy but it's missing some chest feathers where it had been picking at itself. (We noticed that before we brought it home) We stopped at the lost and found board on the way out.

Oh, and they said, we needed to get it a bigger cage. We were kind of waiting to see if we could find the owner but at some point we're going to have to bite the bullet and get one! If we find the owner we're going to get another bird so I guess it doesn't matter. The current cage is 30x20x16 (LxWxH). Not sure what we need though I would think bigger is better.

He's is so gorgeous, I wonder why the owner hasn't put any adds out. If I lost a bird I would have lost birds all over the internet and the local city :(
