Bolo - blue head pionus
Hello, everyone!

I have owned small birds in the way-back past, but have spent the last 20+ years raising my four sons. I am down to one son at home - he is 17 and a natural with any kind of animals - and have been thinking about filling my empty nest by finally getting my dream bird - an African Gray. However, I was afraid I wasn't "ready" for such an intelligent bird, so I have been visiting a nearby pet store and playing with the birds they had.

I was almost ready to buy a fiesty little Sun Conure when I happened to ask about their Pionus - I assumed he was the store's bird... turns out, he didn't like the atmosphere of the store and they wanted him to go to a good home! Woohoo! He came with his cage and all the toys that are in it, so that simplified things on the front end.

Bolo is beautiful! He is warming up to me, and we are learning more and more about each other every day. I have only had him four days, so we are just scratching the surface!

One of the main things I have realized is that he is most happy and relaxed as the sun goes down - ha! my bird is a vampire! JK - but the pet store closes at 7pm, so it totally coincides with that. While he eats and crawls around his cage during the day, he often turns his back on me or crawls away when I try to talk to him. But at his "Happy Time" he climbs on top of his cage, coos and chirps for attention, and he is willing to "step up" on to my finger! Then when I ask if he wants me to rub his neck, he drops his head so I can!!! :D

This forum is priceless! I have spent the last few days reading so many posts, trying to learn more about how to care for Bolo. I am so happy to have this new addition to my family, and I am looking forward to many, many years with him. With the assistance of all of my fellow bird lovers here, I know I will be able to give him the care he needs - the love part just comes natural!

By way of introducing you all to Bolo, I'm going to try to attach a video of him the day after I got him. I was playing Adele for him, and you can just barely hear him do his "baby voice" toward the end of the video...

Sorry - can't figure out attach, but here's the link!

Thank you for joining us. We all welcome you and Bolo. He looks like he is taking it all in. He is very handsome too!! Perhaps one day you can get that gray. There are many homeless ones available.

Thank you both for your welcome!

Spiritbird, I had not thought of adopting a Gray - wonderful idea! And what's even better is that my husband has already been won over by Bolo, and now he wants a Gray too!

Now... To find one near Batesville, Mississippi! :p
