Hi I have recently been given a 9 year old orange winged amazon. The woman I received him from hand fed jade and has been the only owner. Due to recent health problems she had to give him up. Before she gave jade to us we went to her house on occasion and were able to handle him he would step up for my wife and I and was fairly pleasant while we were there. We brought jade home two days ago and I wish I had done more reading on the forums my wife and I have both been bitten a few times. He will interact with us when you sit and talk too him he will talk, whistle etc he will also climb on his cage but will not step up unless he glides too the floor then he will let you pick him up and put him back in his cage. I have read a lot of articles and I am just not sure what too do.also he is on pellets as well as seed. I have been trying fresh veggies I normally fill his bowl about a 1/3 of the way but he is pretty finicky. Any advice on easy meals to prepare. His health and well being are my biggest concern.

So he's been in the same home for the 9 years of his life, and now you're wondering why he might be biting after 2 days with you?

You need to give him time to settle in... Have you ever moved to a new home? If you have, you'll know it takes quite a long time to actually 'feel at home' at this new home...

It'll take longer for birds... They're very intelligent, but you can't explain to them what's happening...

Give him time, love and patience...

Welcome to the forum:)

You need to give him time... He has only been with you a couple of days! It is all new to him after being in the same place for so long!

Patience and more patience is the key here!

Welcome to the forum, lots of good members here who'd love to help. You should read through some of the older threads in the amazon section amd gain some insight into your new companion.

About your OWA, they mate for life and depend on their flock to look after them. You've taken away the most important things in his life and turned his world on end. Similar to you losing your spouse. His cage is the "rock" in his world right now. Keep it near the center of activity in your home. Talk to him and try to include him in daily activities, engage him, show him your fun and interesting. Instill some desire to be with you. Amazons mate for life and he just lost his so it might take a while for him to come around. Practice stepping up if he shows a interest, but don't take him away from his cage(safe spot), step up and quickly back down to the cage. Don't have him step up to go somewhere else or to cuddle with you,you might get bit. Biting is generally his way of saying no. Learn to read his eyes, stance ,tail feathers etc. He's giving you clues to what he's thinking but you haven't learn to read them yet. When he starts to come around to you, don't smother him with love, kisses, pets, etc. show him some affection but only for a short period, leave him wanting more of your attention ,not him biting to say "that's enough".

Food, daily maintenance pellets are best, they should make up a large part of his diet, the rest should be fresh fruit/veggies,sprouts,some nuts and seeds. Seeds and Nuts are high in fat and amazons store fat in their liver, active flighted or breeding birds burn that fat off, clipped caged birds don't. The excess fat store in the liver causes problems and most pet zons die from fatty liver disease. It's not just from sunflower seeds and peanuts but also fatty human food, french fries ,buttered toast, and junk foods that people eat.You can try feeding him small portions of your dinner if he shows an interest (many do) but make sure it's not covered with fat ,salt, sugars etc. Needs to be healthy. I'd try feeding small pieces of things like banana, apple, grapes etc from your hand while he's in/on his cage. I could write a book here but will try not to , all of this stuff in already in the forum in some of the older threads, read around and learn alot. Ask questions in the amazon section, hope to see you around. capt and Jake the YN

Often times we have expectations of what we want from an animal that are not realistic. Henpecked has some great suggestions that will get you started on building a trusting long lasting relationship with your new bird. The key word is trust, so be sure that everything you do around your bird is thoughtful, an quick shout to a spouse in another room can be very startling to a bird as they are very alert to calls from flock members about danger as well as many other things. Keep in mind that parrots are animals and do your best to try to keep that in perspective for all your sakes. Good luck and congratulations on your new companion.

No Jade does not have an AFA band. I would also like to thank you for your comments and suggestions. I was also thinking about Clicker training I'm not sure if I could use that to help our family bond. Jade is truly an amazing animal we are very lucky to have him. And again thank you for your input and insight.

Clicker training would be great, anything you can do ,especially interactions where he doesn't have to be handled, target training is a good example. Find a treat that he likes and only use it during training. remember to praise and reward him for good behavior. You'll do fine.Be best buds before you know it.

I was also wondering what I should do about cleaning jades toys and perches. The pan isn't a problem I just don't want to go stirring up trouble but I think they should be cleaned. Should I wait till he trusts me more??
