Hey guys,

My name is Phil and I am from Minnesota. I passed my boards exam and I am not a Neonatal ICU Nurse! I am very please to have a awesome job and start my career in a good direction. Finally have my own place to stay!

I have way too many hobbies. I enjoy keeping fish/breeding fish and shrimp. That includes both fresh and saltwater. I have racing pigeons and some other pigeons which I like to enjoy. I love working out and everything that has to do with cars! :D

I have had a interest in macaws for a long time and have always wanted one but never could because of my living situation. Well now I just graduated college, got a awesome career job and a new place. I might be able to make my dream of owning a Hyacinth Macaw come true!

Obviously I could go out and spend a fortune and buy one right now. My main reason of joining this forum is to not only meet all you other parrot lovers, but more importantly learn as much about what I need to prepare to have a Hyacinth Macaw. I though that this would be the best place to do so! If any other suggestions, please send me that way!

Look forward to hearing back from you all!

~ Phil

Welcome to the forum and congrats on all your accomplishments. Thats awesome! There are certainly plenty of macaw owners here that can help you out. I am just not one of them and although general bird knowledge is helpful, specific species tidbits can often be the most helpful so I will leave it up to those fine folks. Again, welcome!

Before purchase, i would read both these books cover to cover to know what you are getting into.
1. Parrots For Dummies (my bible)
2. Of Parrots And People
Keep in mind, a macaw is a 3 year old for 80 years and up!

Haha yes 4 nieces all between 2 and 7. I take care of them all the time lol

Cool thanks for the info! Ill head to the library today or tomorrow. IS there any more towards Macaws? I used to keep Parakeets as a child. I was realy good with them and even had one that would free fly in my room and land on my hand. I also took care of a Cockatoo.

I am very interested in learning about Macaws. I have read plenty online which probably has me in the right direction but I am not in school anymore so for the first time in a long time I have leisure time to read a book :D

Also, any parrot lovers on here who breed Hyanciths that doesn't try to get 10 gran for each bird? Help out another parrot lover who is trying to get a beautiful macaw to take care of the majority of the rest of my life!

Around here they can go for $20K depending on the breeder unless the economy has brought prices down.

Thats bogus. I mean I understand people want them to go to trustworthy and good owners but that is ridiculous IMO. Just looking for a honest parrot lover who would make my dream come true and sell one for a good price... That will be hard to find though :(

If you are looking for a breeder, i would reccomend hyacinth haven, they are located in PA, but it is obvious they are all about the birds.

P.S, the guide to companion parrot behavior is also a good book to read.

I think everyone would like to own a hyacinth! I have only met a few and they were even more amazing in person. I thought my GW was big! I know someone who recently got one for 8,000 in Maryland~ Read as much as you can, visit a rescue and get some experience with the larger macaws~good luck and congratulations on your accomplishments!

haha yeh if i did get a breeding pair i would be rich! :p thanks!
how much do macaws cost in america ?

Haha yea you should definitely try to go for it! I know a couple breeding pairs selling for like 25 grand right now! Way too much for most people to spend at once.

Usually a weaned baby goes for about 12-15 thousand

Thanks for the welcome and kind words!
I actually called a rescue shelter today! Not to adopt one but mainly to handle. I have found a couple places that offer them for around $9000. $8000 is the new low lol

No parrots yet but I have two rescued German Shepherds
I know nothing about this bird so I of course had to google it to learn more about the Hyacinth. I found this:

Check out this video on YouTube:

All I can say is I would not want to get bitten by one of these birds!!!
