Hello there,
My name is Andrea and my husband and would consider ourselves bird enthusiasts, I have always been interested in sharing my life with a feathered friend. We currently do not own any birds but are looking to adopt a Congo African Grey within a year. One of the reasons I decided to join this forum is to absorb as much information from experienced bird owners that hopefully will help me become a knowledgeable bird owner. I do have some experience with birds large and small. My parents have always owned Maccaws since I was little and I have always been fascinated by these amazing creatures. My husband and i have had the experience of owning a Green Checked Conure, Pickles, a few years ago. As excited and hopeful we were we make the mistake of adopting him from a pet store instead of a rescue or a reputable breeder. Little did we know he was very temperamental and aggressive. Even with time and patience he didn't seem to want to be around us. He didnt ever want to come out of his cage and wouldnt except treats from us. We were unable to handle him without him biting us and trying to go back to his cage. Finally after 2 months of trying to let Pickles settle in and come out of his shell we called the pet store and found out we were the 6th owner in his short 3 years of life and he had suffered from his stressful lifestyle. I couldn't blame him from what people had done to this poor baby and didn't want to stress him out even more, but we knew he needed a professional. After 6 months of trying to work with him we werent seeing any progress and i couldnt bear knowing Pickles was absolutely miserable. We eventually arranged for him to go to a woman who was very experienced and willing to work with a bird that suffered such a degree of emotional trama and negligence. We know that we were quite irresponsible by aquiring Pickles without doing proper research about the behavioral problems that often arise from 'pet store' birds. Now that we are better informed and knowledgeable, we want to evenutally share our life with a CAG. Feel free to contact us at anytime with any advise or comments =)
Thank you,
Andrea

Hey Andrea ,welcome to the forum. This is a good place to learn and we'll be glad to help. I think your only real mistake was picking a bird who didn't pick you. Not all birds are equal and it takes a lot of work to tame some birds. Next time look for a bird who shows some interest in wanting to be with you. You can find a good pet in a pet store, just look for the bird you can make a connection with. Don't think just because you like them they will automatically like you.

Thank you for all of your input. I didn't mean to infer that a pet store bird is a bad thing, we just should of inquired about the birds background and did a lot of research before we ever brought Pickles home. You make a good point about choosing a bird that will choose me. I think about how inexperienced and nieve we were with Pickles and we don't want to make the same mistakes with our future CAG. I've been told by multiple people that I should start out by getting a budgie or a cockatiel in order to gain more experience as a bird owner before investing in a CAG, do you think that is a good idea?

hey andrea, yes i think getting a Cockatiel is a great idea. Tiels usually do well with other birds so if you wanted to add a CAG later, i don't think it would be a big deal. Tiels are just such great pets.
