Hi everyone! I am very excited about this forum and hope to meet lots of other bird lovers! In our house it is almost a zoo! Not only do we have 3 parrots, but we also have a dog, chickens (outside of course), and we will be getting kittens soon as well! Our birds are Sammy, our 8 year-old cockatiel who is very social and friendly, Lucy, our 7-year old lesser sulfur crested cockatoo, and our newest addition, Cricket, the hyper-active climbing, swinging parakeet! -sammybird

lucy is a third-hand bird. the first home she was in abused her and locked her up in a closet for THREE YEARS!!! because they thought she was "loud". the only interaction with humans was food and water changes(not often) and she plucked ALL her feathers out and when she was finally given up and rehabbed her crest was the only part that didn't grow back. it is sad because the crest is one of the most beautiful things about a cockatoo(next to their personality of course). which is one of the reasons why when we adopted her the man said "are you sure you want her she isn't the most beautiful bird" we replied we aren't trying to win a beauty contest bud. and she has been with us since! and it has been awesome even as i'm typing she is oo-aaing like a monkey!

My LSC Too used to pluck as she was abused at one point too. I think I'm her 3rd owner but I'm not sure. She's twenty something years old and she's been with us for over 8 years. She still barber her feathers a bit especially her crown.

Is there any way we can discourage that? To help it grow back?

Since Dixie no longer plucks, barbering doesn't bother me as much as long as she don't do it excessively. She plucked so heavily when I first got her, part of it will never grow back around her neck/chest area. But most have grown back over time. Try to keep her entertained and giving her toys to chew on, that keeps her occupied. At first she did NOT like other birds being around her, but she likes it now. I have little birds that escape the one side of the glass aviary and goes to her side to visit. She likes them coming to visit and she finds it funny to drop toys towards them and she starts to prance around like she's quite proud of herself for doing so....lol....She's a super sweet and happy bird, she's always dancing and doing funny stuffs to entertain us. I was very lucky to have her as the house she used to live in had two other birds they wanted me to take, two sun conures, they died about a week later after I picked up Dixie. The guy was doing soldering in his garage which is near by where they were at inside the house and he left the door open and the fumes killed them right away. I also think she's happier here as the previous home kept her in a dark laundry room with no windows. I think she was really sad and that's why she plucked....Basically keep them happy and they will improve over time as my Dixie improved tremendously over the years.

2 Cockatiels Harley & Quinn
welcome. I love that you have a zoo of animals. Our home used to be that way until I moved away and my mother became too disabled to do much more. Sadly, now it's down to her two dogs, Honey and Abby, and my two birds, Harley and Quinn, at my home. But we love them dearly and wouldn't part with them for the world.
