Hi,

A few months ago I got a rehome Senegal Parrot on a bit of a whim. I was very lucky and she's lovely, but she has bonded to my husband instead of me. I would like to buy myself a baby bird but I am finding it difficult to choose between the different types.

I need a not too noisy parrot as a really high pitched bird would be an issue due to my ME/CFS. I would also the bird to be cuddly and for it to have the potential to be a talker.

Any help and advice would be massively appreciated.

Kind regards,

Tesni

Pionus are quite birds, they can learn to talk, and have complex colors that show their brilliance in the sunlight.

my favorite is the bronze winged pionus

Another good bird is a galah, they are quieter and less cuddly then the white cockatoos but make excellent pets for dedicated owners. They are very social and if raised right love to be around people. Only downside of a galah is they must be fully flighted, they are highly prone to fatty tumors, obesity, and liver disease and need flight for proper exercise. If they are clipped you drastically cut your birds life span.
Keep in mind they can still be loud

I agree with the two choices presented .....Bronze winged Pionus and Rose breasted Too. Those two birds are quite stunning and sooo beautiful. My horse in this race would be a Blue Crown Conure. BC are cuddly and do talk. Well all the best in your search, Peace be to you.

I agree with the others suggestions. My blue crowned conures are very good talkers and speak in a girly voice, though they can get rowdy and loud if they are out of food. They are good eaters and eat their pellets, veggies and fruit quite well. They do make a mess of their water bowl ALL the time though, I have to change it 3-4 times a day. They make less of a mess around the outside of their cage than the Alexandrines, Amazons, Eclectus, Cockatoos and cockatiels do. This is just all my personal experience though.

Thank you all so much for the suggestions.
All 3 are types i'd not considred!
I was thinking of either another (male) Senegal, a Ring Neck, A Quaker or a Green Cheek conure. How high pitched can these get?
I'm fine with loud noises its just high pitched ones can be very painful. I don't have any problems with Sunny our Senegal as she's very vocal but not very high pitched.
Thanks again for all your help!

High pitched like if a lady was screaming? Or just high pitched as in reallllllly loud. My personal opinion is we all have different thresholds and ideas of what is that OMG can't handle it call from a bird. I would never buy a sun conure and for me personally I haven't met a conure that the call didn't get to me a little bit ( except a green cheek) Quakers can definitely be loud and their call is very repetitive which is hard for some people to handle. My Quaker had me hanging off the ceiling a few times. Our pionus would get loud but never that "quality" of pitch I am having a heck of a time defining! BUT I've met people who can't handle Pionus's. You know if I was you I'd subject myself to a whole Lot of birds see what you can handle. Maybe some pet stores and if your lucky enough a rescue?

Well if the choices were ringneck, quaker, senegal or greencheek conure. The thing you want is talking/cuddly bird then I would shoot for a quaker or a senegal. Ringnecks are not generally cuddly birds and green cheeks are not famous for their talking. Peace be to you.

Our Quaker is super sweet and will go to anyone. I was thinking of a Senegal for myself and my breeder, whom I trust, talked me out of getting one because she said that they can be one person birds and the bird might not choose me. I ended up getting a Blue Crowned Conure and am very happy with my decision. My Roscoe picked me as his favorite and will go to everyone--as long as he doesn't have to leave me to do so.

I agree that Senegals do tend to bond to one person, and can be aggressive to anyone else. They also can be quite loud. I believe the high pitch you refer to is like a sun conure's pitch, which I simply cannot take for too long as it is simply painful. Alexandrines and most ringnecks are high pitched also and have a tendancy to not like hands at all. Amazons have a deeper pitch and mine dont get loud ( except when I was fostering a pair of suns and they wanted the suns to shut up ).
