Gaia (female Solomon Island Eclectus)
Hello!

I am a newbie bird owner, I just adopted a beautiful female Solomon Island Eclectus on friday and I am slowly getting used to how she works. I have always wanted a bird since I was a little girl but just recently decided I would make the big leap and adopt one into my house hold. I have to admit I am a little overwhemed with all of the information that is available for first time parrot owners and a lot of it seems to be contradicting. I look forward to interacting with the community here and I apologize in advance for all of my future newbie questions!

Hello and welcome! I am somewhat new to parrots too, and this has been a really supportive community for me. Everyone here is really kind and patient. Dont worry about asking newby questions, everyone here wants what you want, the very best for your bird. We also love pictures of your new baby, set up etc.

Welcome to the world of being slave to companion parrots and you don't need to apologize for any questions you may have now or in the future.....we all started where you are now...from a beginning and we either asked the questions or lurked in the background listening/reading. Since you are a newbie, understand that all of what you read on the internet is not true. There is a lot of out-of-date information, a lot of mis-information and far too much information that is plain wrong.....and.....there is a lot of information that will lead you to believe a particular product will solve a particular or any number of problems. The best way to sift through all this information is to seek supporting data from other sources and if data that is not verifiable, to your satisfaction, I wouldn't rely on it until ypu are able to confirm it.....keep in mind that all that is sold for companion birds is not safe or good for them.....and.....if it says made specifically for conures, Amazons, macaws, African greys, etc., that is just so much BS because different species may have different requirements and what may be good for a macaw may not be good for an eclectus or lory.

Hello and welcome! I'm a new bird owner also. Got to love the Internet. I have a 5month old conure. Got him from a pet store. They said he was friendly. He bites hard. I'm getting a bit scared of him but don't want to let him know that. He wants to fly, I think but I'm still getting to know him. He only flew 3 times in the week I have him. Each time he seemed stressed about it. His wings are clipped so he can only go a short distance. He seems to want to be on shoulders and not hands, which I don't like since he bites everything first. He loves being out of his cage but only on the top of the cage. He is smart though and knows when we are trying to get him to go back in. I was 45 mins late for work trying to get him in. Good thing I am the boss. Lol. I'm looking forward to reading your stories and see how you are making out with the bonding process.

Here is a picture of her before I took her home. I can post pictures of her setup later. I didn't think to take any pictures of her hom :p

I got her a very large cage with several different hanging toys and shredding toys as well as 10 foot toys. The cage has a huge playgym area on top as well as some extra dishes for treats. I put 4 different types of perches in the cage including a rock perch by her food dishes and a soft rope perch for her to sleep on.

You have yourself a beautiful bird! This week I will be fostering a female eclectus, that just isn't fitting in to the rescue well, she has started plucking, hopefully a quieter atmosphere will help her and she can look as good as your birdie!

WOW, what a gorgeous bird! I love the intelligent expression on her face, she looks so serene. And her colors, so intense!

I'm a new birdy mom too, I have had my little Fiji for a month. I'm still learning a lot, and this forum has been a godsend. It seems that once you have a bird, you become a bird slave, no matter how small the bird  Oh well, i'm not complaining! He has been a great addition to my family :)

Congrats on your beautiful bird!

Thank you for all of the warm welcomes. She is a beautiful bird, she is just magnificent. I just wish she wasn't so scared of me AND she has a vet appointment tomorrow and she won't step up. I don't know how else to get her out of the cage without scaring her. :(

So here is her setup. You can't really see the play area up top because I can't fit it in the picture but there are 3 different perches in there and 2 hanging toys that she can shred and chew on. There is another hanging toy on the op that is a shredder toy as well as all of her foot toys. She hasn't been on top of the cage yet.

beautiful! I know how you feel - Even if you post a question about parrots that seems fairly reasonable, even if you mention you've done a TON of research, you still just get contradicted by those uptight people that say you have to move up in size until you have about 100 unwanted birds (you know the ones :p)all you read about is caveats.(not on this forum btw,I'm a newbie on this forum too! )
Anyway, be sure to post pictures of your Ecckie and Good to have you here!
