Maroon Bellied Conure - Perry - born 8/2012
Cinnamon Conure - Squeaky - born 11/2012
Hi I am new here so please bear with me as I muddle my way through posting, forums, threads and all the bird talk that is new to me.
I have 2 green cheek concures. Perry was hatched August 2012, he is a Maroon Bellied Conure and Squeaky was hatched November 2012, he is a Cinnamon Conure.
20+ years ago we raised Cockatiels but have not had birds in the last 15 years.
These guys were a reward to my 9 year old granddaughter and 4 year old grandson that my husband and I have custody of. She had wanted a bird for 2 years and I said NO - knowing that I would become the primary caretaker eventually and not being ready to assume that responsibility. I told her she had to prove to me she could handle a bird. In a round about way she did. First she has had 4 hermit crabs for over 3 years that have survived and grown. She is very helpful with our 2 dogs and most importantly she did the research on birds herself. She went on the internet and prowled the library looking for the "right" bird. Then she wrote a paper on how to take care of it, what to feed it, how much time it would need, how to clean the cage and what else she thought I should know. Then this past summer she spent her allowance she had saved and bought an appropriate bird cage, not knowing whether Grandpa and I would say yes or not. The cage sat on the porch from August through December, ignored by me. In December she had to have her tonsils out, she did remarkably well in following the surgeons instructions. Unbeknownst to her I had contacted a breeder and arranged to get Perry for her birthday (she had her tonsils out 2 days before her birthday). The following week I drove down to NC to pick up Perry and fell in love. I asked the breeder if I could also purchase Perry's sibling and was told it was already sold. The only other available gcc was a little Cinnamon that was not weaned and was about 6 weeks old. I demonstrated that I knew how to hand feed babies and came home with 2 birds instead of one. Our grandson quickly "claimed" Squeaky as his (but he is really mine). It has been a fun trip so far. Squeaky is now weaned and he and Perry reside as the newest residents of our family.
