A male white faced cockateil named Sky
My mom is going to take me bird shopping tomorrow. We are going to a reputable bird dealer. I am still not sure what kind of bird would be best. Any suggestions?

That is pretty hard to answer, without some more information.....

1. Is this your first bird or have you had other birds?
2. What is your approx. age? Not being nosy, but different age groups usually have different interests, so age kind of tells where you might be in having the time, because some birds require a lot more time and care than others.
3. How much room do you have for a cage?
4. What kinds of birds have you been reading about & think you might like?

We could probably give you some better advice with answers to the above.....

:)

This will be my first bird. I have thought about lovebirds, budgies, or a cockatiel. I really would like a bird that talks. My parents bought me a 24x24x30h cage for xmas.

Home from the breeders and have picked out a young white-faced Cockatiel. He will be ready to bring home in two weeks. I'm excited but a little worried about how our dog will react to a bird in the house.

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you picked a very pretty baby. Cockatiels are a good choice for first time bird owners. They are super smart & most learn to talk quite well. Good luck with your new sweetheart. Take it slow at first til he gets used to you & his new home.

Congratulations on becoming a new parront. His new cage is a good size too.

You mention that you are concerned about how your dog's going to react to your new bird. A lot of people allow their birds to interact with other family pets, including dogs and cats, but that really can be a dangerous situation, because birds are prey animals while dogs and cats are natural predators. It is not so much that they could not get along, but because many birds have quick movements, it may cause a natural response in prey animals to pounce.

Introducing your new bird will help them get to know each other better than the dog just finding your new friend, but you probably don't want them out together at the same time. Until your bird gets to know your dog, you don't want the dog sitting staring at the bird, because it will make a bird nervous.

If you are going to allow your new friend to sit on your shoulder, you will want at least one or two bird shirts.....usually T-shirts that he might want to chew on & most likely poop on. You're going to find that your new friend will provide you with presentations about every 15 minutes, so most bird owners who let their birds ride on a shoulder, just leave their bird shirt on as long as they will be interacting with their bird(s). My birds, conures and a parrotlet are excellent at re-designing T-shirts, or any other shirt I might forget to change out of.
