Hi everyone! I own (or am owned by ;)) a mustard Scaly Breasted Lorikeet named Margarita. Not sure if non Aussie members will know what that is, so i've attached a picture of Margarita below so you can all have a look. He will be 4 months old soon, and I absolutely love him. He loves rolling over onto his back with his feet in the air, he is quite the clown. He looks a bit different to regular Scaly lorikeets, which has drawn the attention of my avian vet and a few of his lorikeet enthusiast buddies. We are currently trying to work out if he has been crossbred somewhere down the line with another kind of lorikeet, or if he is possibly some kind of newer mutation. Here he is, when he was roughly 11-12 weeks old:

Hi and welcome to the forum! I'm an Aussie too! :) I've never seen a lorikeet like that in the wild, but he is surely a cutie!

Your bub is GORGEOUS!
Based on some orangey looking feathers around the neck it could be down from a hybrid pair some way back :) Do you have some better photos of the colours of the back and around the front of the neck?
I wouldn't be surprised if he/she is a down from a hybrid pairing, its not uncommon for them to be interbred for the pet trade. The hybrids can make some really pretty combos and that would also explain where the pied came from :) rainbow x scaly hybrids are fertile and can go on to produce bubs (like alexandrine and indian ringneck). And I believe when there is a mutation in one it makes it a great temptation to cross them to develop the mutation in the other species.

Either way, your bub appears to be either a very neatly highly marked single factor pied or a minimally marked double factor pied. I haven't seen a pied scaly in captivity before. Pied is very common in rainbows :) It could also be a nutritional issue that might pass with its first moult. I know its exciting but you will have to wait and see :p What colour were his flight feathers before they were snipped off?
