Hello from eastern Pennsylvania. I am new here and hoping to have a well versed forum to come to with all of my birdie questions. We are getting a hahns macaw in July. It is a new addition for the entire family, but it is actually for my daughter's 16th bday. Any pet in our home, regardless if it is a "gift" or not, is part of the entire family. I have not had house birds since I was a kid....finches, a couple of parakeets and a set of love birds.
We are complete animal lovers. We have two very furry horses (gypsy vanners for any horse savvy people out there) two miniature horses, and a handful of other critters.
I have done a ton of research before placing a deposit on the hahns macaw. It will be joining us when it is five months old. My daughter liked the conures, but after researching, I felt that the hahns formed a stronger bond with its human counter parts, was equally amusing and interactive, and while it was by no means the deciding factor, it seemed to have a much higher ability to mimic. I know they can be nippy, which seems to be the biggest complaint of owners.
I find it very odd that I have no fear of working/disciplining a 1000 pound horse, will trust my life with this animal when riding at a full gallop, but am cautiously proceeding, and am almost a little apprehensive with the purchase of a 5oz bird! I know it is just fear of the unexpected and unknown, we will handle situations as they arise and as we gain knowledge and experience, we will gain more confidence. I guess it is important to proceed with a healthy respect rather than rush into a situation.
I am sure I will have tons of questions as they arise and am hoping you all will be patient with my inquiries. We have a cage already purchased, a well sanitized and disenfected second hand hybrid cage by cages by design in pristine condition that we put in our family room. I know it is not a favorite for all, but I feel the size 48"x48"x24", with 1/2" Stainless steel sides and top, will make up for the solid front and back. Hanging toys will be added too. We have an avian vet lined up, a shop I can purchase the reccomended dry food from, will be adding fresh foods too, I will be getting a smaller sleep cage that can be placed in a quieter place in the evening.
We are excited to welcome this addition to the family, and I am sure I will have lots of questions in the future. My daughter doesn't know she's getting a hahns macaw, but regardless of what she gets, she said she is naming it Zazoo. Hense my user name Zazoo the hahns.

You discredit conures too much! ;) They are great feisty little companions! That said, I don't think you can go wrong with a hahns, either! I've heard that the mini-macaws are very "conure like" anyway, so I think she'll still be quite happy with your decision!!!

Welcome to the forum!!!!

The only fly I can see that might get in your ointment is that while it will be your daughter's (albeit family) your new feathered friend may well choose someone else in the family as his/her favorite person.....might be helpful if the family is fully understanding of that potential problem.....

Congrats on your forthcoming feathered friend.....

Thank you all so much for the warm welcome. I know there may be a different favorite family member, and we are willing to accept that. I have also told her when the time comes, her bird may very well have to stay put in a stable environment when she goes to college, which she is also fully willing to accept. She was in heaven when I took her to a bird/ breeder shop last night and she was able to interact with some of the birds. So blessed to have a teen that is level headed and kind hearted.

I take it that Zazoo is going to be it's name.. Your daughter is a very lucky girl and what a great Sweet 16 gift. Please post pics when the new arrival makes it to your home.

Yes, Zazoo is the name she has picked, but she is still uncertain what se will be getting. I constantly tell her if she developers a poor attitude between now and her bday, she better watch out, she'll end up with a pet finch in that huge cage rather than what she has her heart set on. She has no clue there is already a deposit on a baby Hahns macaw.
