Hello Everyone!

I'm Josh. I was fortunate enough to stumble onto this forum whilst browsing for tips for new macaw/bird owners. First we have a fairly young Macaw, Liela, which my dad bought thinking it was a Blue and Gold. When i first saw her, i quickly realized she was a starlight or catalina. She is close to 2 years old, and beautiful, but she isn't very friendly :(

Then there is Moody. He is a Moluccan Cockatoo and is, from what we are told, 4 years old. He too is also very unfriendly, but extremely beautiful.

We also have Marlo, an African Grey. He lets us pet him, but tries to bite me when i put my hand in his cage. :(

Being the designated beast master of my house, i'm hoping i can gain some insight on how i should go about training these new members of my family to interact better with us. I am a firm believer that no animal should be caged all day.

I apologize for any inconvenience caused by my wall of text

OniKesshi, do you also happen to have some pics of the back of your macaw? It looks like it could indeed be a catalina, but without all his chest feathers it's hard to tell. What's his story?

not sure if those are the cages you are using, but they look a little rough. They could also use more horizontal bars so the birds have an easier time climbing.

With training, the key is getting the bird used to you first. Try feeding them out of your hand. Once they get used to that, start presenting your hand for them to step up, or allow them to climb out on their own. Try to never pull away when bitten.
