Alfred and Trinka are my finance's mother's birds and he got them in the early 90's. They lived in CT and his mother moved to CA after his father's death and they went to live with his brother. She took her African Grey and Cockatoo with her and left the two Amazons with his brother in CT. The year before last the house in CT was sold and his brother was not capable of taking care of the birds, the dog and the cat. We adopted them here in Western NY. The situation became a little hard to handle as previously we had not had any pets at all. My fiance, with his mother's permission, allowed his co-worker Charlene to take care of the birds temporarily because her daughter loved them and was planning on being a vet. The agreement was that at ever at any point she was not able to care for them that his mom would pay her for her services and pay for them to be sent back to CA. His Mom was in contact via email and phone to make sure they were doing well. Our frendship with Charlene was terminated last year when she was fired from her job for problems with drugs and alcohol. We were unable to get in contact with her and we became concerned. We tried to retrieve the birds and she would not give them back and claimed she would only return them to my fiance's Mom. My fiance's mom was recently here on a cross country trip in her Winnebago and they took a ride over to where she lived to get the birds. She claimed they were with her ex-husband where her daughter currently lived and they were doing great. She told her to call the next day and she would take her to see them. She never answered the phone or door again. His Mom returned back to CA and decided to check Craig's List and found the ad. We tried to contact her again to find out who she sold them to and she told us to go to Hell. My fiance's mother can provide over 20 yrs of vet records for these birds. She doesn't necessarily want them back, just wants comfort in knowing they are in good hands. It would mean a great deal to her. She feels like she lost two children. If you are an animal lover you know what I mean. Please help if you can.

Well, that's not much to go on. No bands? no dates when this happened? have a copy of the CL ad? Give us something to go on.

Thank you for your thoughts. The police is not the route I wanted to take. The reason is because I let her babysit them (lack of a better way of saying it). She knew what she was doing and she knew she was wrong. She just wanted money because she was broke. I am so angry right now because it is not healthy for them to be bounced around to so many homes.

I guess finding to whom the birds were sold, on your own, is quite hard, if not impossible. But the girl can still help you.
Why don't you offer her money in order to help you, since she might still be broke? Or, let your fiance's mother hire her somewhere using her vet acquaintances. Try to contact her via email telling her this deal and she might accept it when it'll sound friendly.

I'm not sure if this would work, but why not try responding to the ad anonymously.

pretend you are interested in the birds, and set up a time and date.... tell them you are not far and would like to come and see them.

at least you would get a location on them.

I am genuinely sorry about all this. :(

I truly hope you find out legit info on these birds, most importantly that they are in loving, caring, forever homes.

The police will tell you that this is a civil matter because you all had an agreement. Birds are property and therefore this is a breech of contract case whether it be verbal or in writing. So I'm sorry to say that there isn't much anyone can do here unless you try to take her to court and that would be an iffy proposition since you weren't paying her to care for the birds and verbal contracts are left up to interpretation. It's kind of like he said, she said.

But if you are serious about locating the birds and the new owners, try putting an ad in the local papers, Craigslist and such. Someone might feel sorry for you and come forward with the birds.
