Baby Lorikeet ~ Petrie
And 2 Lovebirds
Hey everyone, I'm Jamie, 17 and from Australia :)
This morning i found a baby Lorikeet tangled in some long grass. He couldnt fly and i couldnt find find any nests around where i found him. I'm not exactly sure how old he is, but he doesnt have all his colour yet or all of his feathers. I fed him a bit of water through a syringe and he seemed to drink that alright. So now i'm wondering what to feed him?? I can't get to the shops to buy special food until tomorrow. I have carrots and corn, and parrot seed which i feed to my Lovebirds. I also have previous experience with birds.
Any help would really be appreciated at the moment! Thanks :)

I would recommend contacting a lorikeet breeder - they will know exactly how to make the formula. When I handfed my baby lory, it was a mixture of nectar and something else I can't remember - then it needed to be heated to 104 degrees farenheit, and I fed it with a Dixie cup and the baby lory drank it right up.

I looked online and found some breeders in Australia:
Breeders - Hunter Valley Avicultural Society

You can use handfeeding formula to feed baby Lory! There's no need for nectar until they're older during weaning stage. I prefer Zupreem Embrace but that's my personal choice....

everyone else seems to have you covered. I just wanted to say make sure you keep him quarantined from your lovebirds. :)

And i just thought id check for you: because it isn't something that everyone thinks of, but you might want to give this a read - http://www.ehp.qld.gov.au/register/p01384aa.pdf

and contact a local rescue or vet to let them know when and where you found it

If the baby is unweaned (not eating by itself) it needs handraising mix from your local pet shop, it needs to be heated to a certain temperature - 40°c. Depending on how young it is it may also require extra care such as being kept in a heated environment. Check out Hand Rearing Baby Parrot part 1 - The Feeding and have a read

I love Australia for that with all the wild life but it scares me every time I watch all the dangerous snakes you could encounter....lol....I'm petrified of snakes.....

I've never hand fed a baby Lory before but read about it when I got my first Lory several years ago now. He was starting to wean by not completely and I was starting to freak out because most of the shops here stopped carrying Nectar formula. I rush to order one big bag and it arrived damaged with holes all over the bag (wasn't about to use it) and I completely freaked out crying my eyes out thinking I failed him and all. Then my breeder friend came to the rescue by having some on hand until I get my replacement nectar.
