Just had conure die suddenly

I was taking care of my grandaughter's birds, while they are on vacation. A 40 year old conjure and a 3 year old parakeet. They are in a big cage together, today in seconds the conure fell from his perch and died. Does this happen frequently? He seemed very healthy and did not act any differently. I don't know how I'm going to tell my daughters family, but more important is the parakeet. Should I change his cage? Is his health at risk? I would really appreciate any information. He was a part of the family and will be missed.
Thank you, Wilda

40 years is a very long life for a conure.......

i am the mom of three parrots:

Nellie- hyacinth macaw
Reggie- hyacinth macaw
Marnie- white bellied caique
It depends on what caused the death. I am sorry that this happened to you, I know how upsetting this is. Did you use any air fresheners, carpet cleaners, non stick cookware? Try and think if you did anything prior to the death. I would however think that it would have affected the parakeet as well however. 40 years is I think pretty old for a conure however I think the fact that it just fell and died, maybe it hurt itself when it fell. Could it have gotten into anything (to eat) that the parakeet didn't? I'm sure other more knowledgeable owners will jump in here. I'm sorry.
