I'm new here but his forum looks very familiar to me, possibly under a different name? I haven't been on-line for a while. Major computer crash and lost all my favorites, just thought I'd look for another parrot forum.:p

Hi,
What a great site :)

I am new to the bird thing, but have wanted one for a long time. For Mother's Day I brought home a tiny baby Love Bird from a pet store. Now you'd think, having dogs and knowing what awful places those little pet shops can be with their puppy mill dogs etc, I would have thought twice, but nope, DUH! Anyways...I brought the little guy home, he was a little thin and very scraggly looking, but otherwise healthy, clear eyes, nose and vent, he ate like a champ and wasn't tame so I was working on that with him and we were getting there. One Tuesday I woke him up as usual and he just fell over and died right there...damn, I loved that little bird. I was heart broken.

So, my husband, being the wonderful guy he is, found a breeder of parrotlets, (he knew I had scrubbed the cage within an inch of it's life) brought me home a lovely little blue guy that is a joy. He was handraised, already knows "up" and loves to play and be by us on his play gym or someplace on our person and loves to chatter. I also have a coupla standard poodles and an eight year old son who is the light of my life.
I am looking forward to reading the forums and talking about birds.

Welcome to the forums, sorry to hear about your first bird, but perhaps it is something to learn from; do you know the cause of death? Hopefully not to bring up a sensitive topic, but while he may have been unhealthy from the beginning there also a number of very dangerous things for birds in the average household.

The number one thing would be anything in the air, birds respiratory systems are very different, and much more sensitive than ours. The contributing factors are easy to overlook: teflon cookware, air fresheners, aerosols, cleaning agents, smoke, or any number of other household odors can be deadly for birds.

Often the dangers in some of these are overstated, but the importance of knowing about all of them cannot be overstated.

Welcome again, look around, and feel free to ask any questions.

I don't know, for sure, what the cause was. The only thing I can think of was maybe he was too young to be sold....At twelve weeks, Max is fully feathered and looks great. The Love Bird, Pooper, was not. I don't have anything that I use in the house that would have hurt him...I don't use teflon pans, I threw them out when I found out it was a health hazard to humans. I have done a bunch of reading and found nothing that could explain it. Maybe just one of those things? Thanks for the welcome, I know I can ask questions and tell stories about Max here and get good advice. Again this site is great.

Hello All
I am new to the forum and would like to introduce myself and the flock.
I am Linda from Pennsylvania and am slave to the following:

Binky and Bonkers/ lovebirds
Bobbie/Half moon conure
Bella/ Cinnamon Green Cheek
Patty/ Patagonian conure
Gabby/ B&G macaw

Actually right now hubby is slave to the kids except for Bane. I have had to move in with my dad to care for him as mom passed in Feb and she was his caregiver. But I had to keep at least one bird with me for sanitys sake. I look forward to making new friends on here.

Hi all, I'm not new here, but it's been a long time since I was here. I clicked on here and the first picture I saw was an Austrailian Red Rump Grasskeet. I had one for many years. I rescued him when I went into a woman's basement to see a Canary she had for sale and saw him. He was in a tiny cage, never got out, no toys, thin, broke my heart, picked up all the pieces and held it in his grasp for years to come. It was a sad day when he died of old age. He was one of the best birds I have ever had.

I was raised with Canaries from the day I was born and I raised Finches for many years after I was grown. I have had Budgies,Teils, Blue Front, Red Rump and have a Sun Conure and a blind Lutino Tiel now. I'm OLD, so I have outlived most of my pets. I worry about the ones I have, all rescues, wondering what will happen to them when I am gone. I guess I need to plan for that ASAP.

I have been an artist for almost 68 years. I did my first wall mural at 4. I painted little horse, puppies and kittens on my bedroom wall. I got spanked for it of course, so I went back in there and added 3 birds to the painting. Nobody even tried to get it off, but my mother lived to see me get paid for the same thing she spanked me for doing.
I have retired from doing wall murals because at almost 72, I don't need to be climbing on ladders and scaffolds. I just do canvas paintings now and paint horses, dogs and parrots on Greeting cards...like Christmas and blank note cards.

We raise horses, had 77 at one time, now down to hobby size with only 6. I sold 4 last week. We raise them to sell, so I don't get very attached like I do with the birds and the dogs.

That's about the whole boring story. Nothing I could add would spice it up any, so I'd better quit before I get booted!
I don't spend as much time on line as I once did, but will try to check in often.
Thanks for the reminder. This is a good site and I had lost it. Gotta love the birdies!!!!!

Budgie, 2 Cockatiels, Green Quaker, Sun Conure, Vos Marie Eclectus, and a Double Yellow Headed Amazon.
Hello,

My name is Denny and I have companion parrots...........LOL

I have several adopted parrots. An Eclectus from Mattie Sue, a Sun Conure and Green Quaker from a relative, a Double Yellow Headed Amazon from a someone who met me and needed a new home for his friend, 2 Cockatiels, and a Budgie.

One of my Cockatiels was purchased from a pet store. He was in a small pet store about an hour from me. I'd seen him in there each time I'd visit. I eventually bought him because no one else would. He was quite the unsocialable little guy. In time however, he relaxed and has turned out to be quite the companion. I love to tell this story.

Well anyways, I'm owned by several parrots and enjoy all my time with them.

Happy to be here and l look forward to good conversations.

Welcome Brian,

There is much to learn and consider when choosing what type of parrot would be right. If you tell us a bit about yourself and what you are hoping to get out of a relationship with a feathered friend - and what you are able (unable) to give to that relationship - we may be able to help narrow down the choices.

Hi Everyone, my name is Brigid and I live in Lexington, Ky. I have 4 daughters, 3 in college and one completing her Senior year of High School. I have 3 birds, one cat and one dog, as well as the most wonderful, patient, tolerant husband ever! He puts up with me and all my pets.

Max is a Yellownape Amazon approximately 14 years old. I'm his 2nd owner and I have had him 12 years.

Larry is a Bluecrown Conure, and I'm not quite sure of his age. He had 7 different homes in 6 years and I've had him about 13 years, so I'm guessing he's about 19. He is now in his forever home.

Kiwi is a Senegal and I got him when I moved to Kentucky so he's about 12 years old. I am his first and last owner.

I can't wait to meet and talk to other parrot owners and am excited about this site.

Hi I am new here also...after losing my beloved Nanday to a tragic pool accident, and missing him so much, I thought to get a new bird. So after much thought and research
we have purchased a wonderful 15 week old Cape. I am a bit worried because after we purchased him I found his breast bone to be very sharp. So I am thinking he is underweight. We are feeding him well..I tried to supplement with the baby bird formula but he was not interested... he slept most of the first 2 days we had him. now he is very alert, eating well, playing and trying very hard to talk... I am just so worried about his breast bone being so pronounced. when should I notice the weight going on.
