African grey 11weeks old
Hi , looked at lots of forums this one seems good ,
So here goes ,
We brought are baby african grey home 4 days ago
11.5 weeks old , we think she's a girl so called her Ruby ,
Brand new cage 3 x 2 top opening perch plus a big play stand .
She's on pellets some fruit & veggies
We still giving her oats mixed with Apple juice in mornings
And sweet potatoe veg mash at night time all good .
Ruby took her first yesterday and landed well not high , 3 flights today all good not to high .
In 4 days ruby hates her cage , frantic climbing and scratching the corners
She just wants to be all day ,
We have been putting her back in at our meals time for about 2 hrs then she's back out for the evening , then back in for about 9 pm
We are really frightened she will hurt herself
She has some toys , but not to many so she won't hurt herself with the climbing and flapping , is this normal I think it's like a baby who doesn't want to be put down , is it going to be a battle of wills .
Any advice welcome ...:grey:

It's normal for them to act that way. You must teach them it is ok to go back in the cage otherwise you'll have no peace down the road when she would refuse to go inside the cage period. So right now you just need to place her within and let her get used to it for the time being. Offer treats and such inside the cage.

It is always best to remember when bringing home baby parrots that you figure out the average amount of "out of cage time" they will be getting in the future. It is so tempting to have babies out all the time with us. What it does is make it quite difficult down the road for them to spend more time in the cage. Once life starts getting back to normal after the baby gets older, chances are that you are going to have your bird in the cage more than you are now. That's normal, just make sure that you train her to like her cage, to play by herself. Giving treats in the cage, making sure she has foraging toys so she can search for some favorite snacks. Greys need lots of different toys, changed frequently so they don't become afraid of new toys in there cage. I make a point to give Dorothy new toys every week, I rearrange things in her cage and so far she is very bold when it comes to new toys being placed in her cage. Remember, it is always a good idea to give your bird lots of different types of toys, shredding, wooden, plastic, bells etc. It is very normal for greys to scratch at the bottom of their cage, usually in a corner. I think this is common for most of them. Dorothy goes through phases, sometimes she does it more often sometimes months go by without her doing it. I think you will find that most of the greys display this action.
