Hello,

I live in sunny Queensland (I say as the rain pours down) with 2 cockatiels, 2 galahs, an Alexandrine, 3 chickens and 3 rats. Oh, and some human people too. We're about to lose (rehome) one of our galahs after having discovered that she has a virus that she could pass on to our other birds, so it's not been the best week for us. The baby Alex won't eat and the baby galah doesn't know when to stop eating. I joined up here to get some help with the little Alex, but I might hang around and put up pics of our babies as they grow!

Cheers
Lilibet

If he's not used to you feeding him that's what happens. If the breeder had pulled him a bit early at two week you might still encounter the same issue from change of hand feeder. How many times are you feeding right now? Have you tried skipping a feeding to see if he would beg on the following feeding time? If not, you may just have to crop feed until he's weaned.

He's sort of between 3 and 4 feeds at the moment. I'm giving him 10% body weight per feed, which is taking about 6 hours to clear from his crop. So he's getting 3 full feeds, at 7am, 1pm and 7pm, then a top-up at 11pm just before I go to bed. His crop is empty for the 7am feed. He groans a bit at feed time, especially when the galah is doing his usual I'm-dying-of-starvation-here begging, but it's pretty half-hearted.

I haven't tried skipping a feeding because I don't want to risk having him weakened or dehydrated. I can delay his next feed if it might be helpful. Or should I just move him onto 3 feeds/day so he's good and hungry when mealtime rolls around?

He's probably closer to 4 weeks than 3 now, come to think of it. I'm putting a photo up in my thread under 'Alexandrines'.
