Blue and Gold Macaw
Hello fellow parrot lovers!

I am new to this forum and a newbie parrot owner. I have wanted a macaw ever since I was a teenager and can now fulfill this dream :) After researching different species of macaw, I found that the most suited macaw for me is the blue and gold although I am well aware that generalizations really do not apply to each species as a whole.

Anyway I have chosen my gorgeous B&G but will not get to take him/her (waiting on DNA) home until the end of January due to the bird still being weaned. So that is my story! I hope to make some new friends and gain as much knowledge as I can on these remarkable parrots.

Thanks everyone, best Terry.

Terry -

Welcome to the group! Congrats on your pending new parrothood :) I'll enjoy your postings and hearing your story as you start your adventure!

I actually am the opposite, I never liked birds, they were always too noisey and too messy, but my daughter (she's 22) is the bird fan. She started with cockatiels (which honestly only proved my point of messy and noisey), but then we added two green cheek conures to our family and boy did they turn me around!! I liked the cockatiels, they are beautiful babies, but they really only love my daughter (she hand raised the pair of sisters - not by choice, long story), but the conures were like bringing home a whole new aspect of feathered critters!! They quickly won over both myself and my husband. So much that we adopted a bird 'of our own' recently, well actually the bird picked us out and did everything but packed her bags and drove the car home. I actually thought I would get an eclectus (they are just so gorgeous), but a bare eyed cockatoo needing a home decided she was a better choice for us.

Look forward to hearing your story!!!

Yeah they are definitely noisey and messy, although my green cheek is very quiet. I agree green cheeks are lovely little birds with big personalities although I am sure you found that out already!

It seems inevitable that after being around these birds, you and your husband would eventually want one also, so congratulations on your new family member, how long have you had your bare eyed cockatoo? what did you decide name wise? I am still trying to come up with boy and girl names for my baby, but its not an easy feat! I guess the more I see him or her the easier it will be to come up with a name. I am also getting the sex info sometime next week so I will know for sure what sex it is, although I have a feeling that its a boy.

Terry,

Ivory is about 4 and knows her name, so we are kinda stuck. Been trying to get her to 'adapt' to Ivy, but think getting me to accept Ivory is winning (and easier).

She has only been with us about a month. The cockatiels have been her up to 6 years and the conures about 3 :) I am no longer able to work full time, so being home most of the time is a factor too with the addition. I had been reading about the large birds for 6 months if not longer, but was not actually looking for an addition, but guess the stars aligned and all things fell into place and we stumbled unto Ivory. We all keep laughing, we would never ever had thought we'd have a cockatoo!

So what names are you thinking?? Have you met him/her yet? No names pop into mind? Names can change too... my daughter named the first pineapple green cheek - Arianna, but she was such a little monkey climbing around, hanging upside down and such that I kept calling her Monkeybird, name stuck and while her vet records say Arianna, she knows her name to be Monkey :) Same with the other, a turquoise green cheek, name is Hijikata (yes, my daughter is an anime fan)... he came home after being weaned from the breeder and was a little monster, never mean, but just irony as all heck, so he got the nickname Monsterbird and that stuck too :) They both think Monkey and Monster are their names, kinda like a nickname for the kid that sticks thru school!

But share name thoughts, naming a new family member is half the fun!!

Welcome to the forum! Great place they've got going here. I'm a newbie myself and am getting a blue and gold myself this week. He's 16 years old though. Can't wait!

Anyway, again, welcome!
