Hello all, New happy owner here

I would like to say hello and glad to be here. My story in short form is this.

I have always wanted a parrot for as long as I can remember. I recently have a contractor working in my house and he was talking about a Macaw that he owned that really didn't get much attention and he really was not sure that he wanted it any more. He said it had gotten loud and had started biting. Well I was thinking the same thing you all are right now. He was not getting the positive attention that he needed and that was the reason for the issues. I let the gentlemen know that if I had the money I would take him off of his hands. In just so many words I did tell him I would adopt him if he ever felt that he could not care for him any more. Well, today I got the call. He asked me if I still wanted him. He said that he could not take him anymore and was willing just to give him away to a good home. I gladly accepted and told him I would be right over to see if "Chuck" would accept me. I walked in and he told me to be very careful as he was the only one that could handle the bird. I asked him to put him out on his perch so I could talk to him out of his "home" environment. After a while of talking ablout everything in life in general I reached for Chuck. He did scream and nip at me but not hard and I was ready for it. (I told my wife that if he bit and drew blood I would come home with out a bird). I just left my arm there and continued up for him to perch which he did readily. after several attempts with no more biting I brought him home!!! He is a little nippy and loud right now here at the house but I think he will adjust nicely. He "snakes" at my wife all of the time, but she is just not ready quite yet and is due with our 4th child in several weeks.

Sorry for the long version of my short story. I am just excited to have Chuck here and wanted to share my story. I look forward to learning much and sharing with all of you in the future.

In time Chuck will settle down, be patient, give him lots of love and attention.

Aaron, what kind of Macaw is Chuck? I read the post and there was no payoff for me ... I love them big ol' Macs!!!

Understand something about Macaws, pinching and nipping is a way of life ... if they don't draw blood it's not really a bite .... if they sever a finger or too, they might be a little cranky. This does not mean, how ever that this type of behavior should be allowed to happen.

Also, within the next few days and weeks expect Chuck to start testing his new "boundaries" don't let him get away with anything ... YOU need to establish yourself as the flock leader early and let Chuck know what he CAN and CAN NOT get away with ...

LOL ..... I am so sorry for not giving more info. "Chuck" in an 11 year old Blue and Gold Macaw. I had written the post in another document and forgot to put it up so it is about a week old. As of yesterday we have had Chuck for 10 days and he is now settled in pretty nicely. I think he was yelled at lot by an uneducated owner before me. He will tell you his pass life if you listen to him talk to himself. He does cuss from time to time but I believe that the previous owner yelled and cussed at Chuck quite a bit. The previous owner said that he really could not stand him and he was really loud so that tells me that he was not treated well. So far to date now Chuck has said over 25 phrases and I cant tell you how many words and animal sounds. The previous owner said all he could do was yell, scream, growl, and cuss. I have alot of work to do with him but he repeats my words often now. He did not get but just a couple hours of sleep in the past in his old home. Now he has a perch attaches to my wall unit bed that allows me to put him to bed to get good sleep. I have him on 8 to 8 right now and I can really see a difference in him since I got him. His diet I believe might have had him really messed up to. I was told to only feed him pellets by the previous owner because he would get really loud if you fed him anything else. I will list below the feed I have him on now. I knew when I heard about Chuck that he was just a poorly cared for bird. That is why I had to get him. I have a big heart for neglected pets. I have taken in so many that I had no clue what to do with, but I learn as I go with help from others like you all here. I look forward to learning and hopefully sharing with you all more in the future.

Chucks diet now

Bowl #1 - Water changed at least 2 times daily.

Bowl #2 - Vitamin Fortified parrot Seed nut mix

Bowl #3 - fortified pellets mixed with fruit flavored pellets

Bowl #4 - Veggy fruit mix: (most from frozen bag veggies) - Fresh apple slices, fresh baby carrot slices, fresh celery slices, walnut chunks, frozen broccoli chunks, frozen peas, frozen spinach, frozen green beans, frozen mixed peppers, small amount of homemade plain beef jerky 100% lean beef, and boiled egg added once a week.

If anyone has any ideas as to what more I could do for his diet to help improve his quality of living please feel free to let me know........ Thanks

I cannot tell you what a difference of just a little over a week has done for Chuck. This is NOT the bird that I took in. He is a new bird now and is really getting better every day.

AWWWWW! He's beautiful. Seems like quite the character. How could anyone not love him. You are doing a wonderful job with him.

LOL you should rename him Stevie for his Stevie wonder dance. He's really beautiful! Glad he found a good home.
