Hi everyone,

I'm so happy to be here with all of you and learn from some experienced parrot owners! I have had a 4 month old Maxi Pionus for one week now, so I am very new to this!

Could anyone offer some advice--Olive, my Pi, seems to be adjusting well. She will take treats from my hand and runs to the front of the cage to see me. The problem I am having is when I open her cage door, she climbs to the roof of the cage. This is fine, except she doesn't know how to step up, so I just have to wait for her to go back in the cage herself. Any advice how to proceed? She came from the breeder not knowing how to step up, and I can't seem to get her to do it on a perch, and definitely not my hand. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello and welcome! My hawkhead also didn't know how to step up, so in the beginning my husband would put his arms on the cage around her, kind of making a corral. He would just move them a little closer to her at a time and she would head back into the cage a step at a time. She wasn't nearly as scared when he did that as when we tried to get her to step up, that really freaked her out at first. it didn't take long before she realized we weren't going to hurt her and she started stepping up. Good luck and I'd love to see pictures!
