New Here Today!

Hey all just joined today thought of it while googling about parrots Hey why not join a parrot forum! Duh.. lol. Anyway My grandmother just recently passed away she had a total of 6 parrots in her house which my aunt could not take care of. I lovingly adopted two of them to my house, a Sun Conure and A Congo African Grey. I had parrots before A Patagionian conure (I know I'm not spelling that right lol) and a Nanday conure Which I Left to a very good friend in florida when I moved to maryland cause I was afraid they wouldn't take the move well ( I regret it now though I miss them alot) Anyways, I have a inkling of how to start with birds but recently found out this African Grey (Buddy is his name) has been rehomed FIVE TIMES! No one knows how old he is... he talks of course but other then that Doesn't want to come out of his cage bites and is leary I'm hoping we can form a understanding and hopfully he won't think this is just another stop in his many homes. Sorry for the long Post anyway I'm sure I'll talk to everyone soon enough thanks for having me !

Hello birdie lover, great to have you joining us.
Sure you going to have a great time browsing through the forum.
Poor Buddy, rehomed 5 times, stressful for any bird.
He obviously feels safe and secure in his cage.
Try leaving the door open, sitting nearby and just talking to him.
Continue doing this everyday, don't attempt to touch him or take him out.
This may take a while, he must gain your trust.
Offer him treats through the bars at first. Some fruit, nuts, anything you know he likes, and is healthy.
After a while, sit near the door, and offer a treat. When he feels comfortable, in his own time, he should take it from your hand.
When he takes it from you, praise him continuously.
When this occurs, the bonding is taking place.
When Buddy feels safe (knowing he will not be rehomed again) hopefully, he should begin to climb out the cage.
Enjoy your time with the birds "FRIENDS FOR LIFE"

I got my first quaker Popeye, from a friend. When I would go visit, I could do almost anything with him: hang him upside down, twirl him around, just about anything. I was told he'd been in 5 different homes in as many years, due to his biting and cage aggressiveness. Then I brought him home to stay.

It took 2 months of just sitting by the cage with the door open, resting myhand on the door, and basically ignoring him. Letting him come out on his own terms, in his own time. He turned out to be previously abused, not by my friend, but previous owners. He hated towels and gloves, and feared dark places, like a nest box. It took alot of love and patience on my part, but before long Popeye was one of the most loving birds I ever had.

They do have long memories, so just be patient. Buddy will eventually come around and then you'll have the companion of a lifetime. Good luck!
