35 year old Red Lored Amazon
Hello my name is Jamie C. and I am the proud new owner of a 35 year old handicapped Red Lored Amazon... I adopted him from his owner. Here is a quick story of how and Why I now have him.

His name is Leroy and he came into my work (I am a vet tech at a hospital that has a board certified avian vet) he came in because he had a club foot. long story short he has a tumor in his abdomen that could be pinching a nerve in his leg causing him to have his clubbed foot. I can manually open and close his foot but he cant. He stayed at my work for about 3 weeks while his owner was in the hospital himself.. He is very sick and there is a good possibility he may pass soon (not sure what he has)
Well he picked him up the other day and was going to transfer Leroy to Georgia to his sister as the owner couldn't care for him. (I was sad because we bonded)

I got a call from the owner asking me if I would like the bird as he could no longer care for him and his sister wouldn't be able to care for him..

Well i was thinking and looking for a parrot at the time and I still am ... How could I say no :)

Now any help with handicapped parrots if any of you have experienced this please let me know :)

Naw poor little guy, has it always been like that?
My partner has a SC2 who had her toes on one foot bitten off by her daddy when she was a baby but she manages just fine =D

No hasn't always been like this.. was brought into my hospital having developed it.. It turns out he has a tumor in his abdomen that is poss pinching a nerve

The vet I work for is a board certified avian vet and he is unsure how agressive the tumor is or how long he has but I will love him for the next few months or years if I happen to be lucky to have him last that long... In the next month he will have 2 new friends joining his flock a Double yellow headed amazon and a grey :)

Hi and welcome. So, will Leroy need an operation to remove the tumour? He's lovely. :D

I do not think this is an option... If it was it would not be a favorable outcome that he would make it through his surgery.

Oh, that's a shame, well I hope it's not aggressive and that he remains well for as long as possible.

Me too... I adopted him knowing he is probably terminal and vowed to give him the best "how ever long he has left" :)

He's as cute as a button!:D. I see why you couldn't pass him up. Thankfully he ended up with you and not some family member of the previous owner who didn't want him or know anything about birds. There are more than a few people on here with disabled birds, and I'm sure they'll chime in when they come across this. Best of luck with him.

Bless you for taking him in.
So sad what the owner is going through being ill and having to give up his bird, must be heartbreaking.
He is so gorgeous and so cute.

Praying you have many wonderful happy years together.

What a darling! And so are you for caring! I hope Leroy settles in well with you and that you grow a strong bond for each other. It's a sad shame about his original owner and I pray he has an easy time of it, whatever he's going through. Best of luck with your new bird/flock - I hope you enjoy our forum! :)

What a cutie Leroy is! So wonderful that you have taken him in, and I'm sure that must ease his original owners mind knowing he will be well taken care of. I hope he and you have many good years together:)
