A cockatiel named Poptart
Hi there,
My name is Heidi and my family and I just got a cockatiel on April 29th. We have had all kinds of animals but this is our first bird. I am totally in love and want to be the best mama I can. Not sure if Poptart is a boy or girl, Was born at the end of January and hand fed. I am nervous like a new mom!! My boys and I are trying to learn all we can. I look forward to making new friends and getting lots of advice! :grey:

Cinnamon pearl pied cockatiel. My guess is a hen! (I have one, too!)

If you could find out what the mutations are of the parents, then we may or may not be able to tell you for sure!

Cinnamon and pearl mutations are both sex-linked mutations. This means that only the father needs to carry the genes (visually or split) to pass the genes on, visually, to female offspring. If both parents carry the genes, then you can get males and females of those visual mutations. If only the mother is a carrier of the genes (visually) then no offspring will be visual, however male offspring will be split for the mutations.

Visual Male - Two Genes
Split Male - One Gene
Visual Hen - One Gene
Split Hen - Not Possible

So.... to put it easier.... if Poptart's mother is not cinnamon or pearl (or both!), we can safely assume that Poptart is a hen!

However, if Poptart's mother is in fact a cinnamon pearl (pied or split pied), there's no way to visually sex Poptart!

If Poptart is a female, then she'll continue looking the way she is.

If Poptart is a male, then he should, in theory, lose his pearls. (the small white dots on the back of his wings!) His back should turn grey as he ages, however being a pied, he could very well keep his pearls for years to come! Or his pearls may turn into "ghost pearls". He may even lose some but keep others!

BTW, welcome to PF! :)

That is so cool!! When I go him/her I was told Poptart was a Pearly Lutino. I am not sure about the parents. I am sure I could find out. I was also told that most females are not talkative but the males are. Not sure about that since I am so new to bird world! Thank you for all the advice. I love this place :D

When I read pearly lutino, this is what came to mind!

I'm not sure why people call pearl and/or pied birds lutino when they aren't. Lutino birds are yellow, they do not have any grey on them. Saying that, a cinnamon lutino may have a grey/brown wash to their feathers, the feathers aren't exactly grey/brown.

If Poptart was a Lutino Pearl, she'd look like this hen.

Here's a couple other photos of lutino pearls where you might be able to see the pearls better.

In comparison, normal lutinos are very white birds.

Here's Casey, my cinnamon pearl pied hen. :)

It is true that males are more talkative than females, and males are more likely to mimic than females are. Tomi Girl, my pied hen, can wolf whistle! I know someone who owns an egg-laying female that has learned to whistle and learned a few words! I recall someone else who had two breeding hens that could sing just as well, if not better, than the male tiels!

So there will definitely be some unique individuals out there! ;)
