hey my name is missy, ive been trying to find a forum that i like for parrots and ive found parrotforums.com very interesting. i have a quaker parrot named Toby and he was hatched 4/2/09 and i hand fed him from week 4. hes my baby. i just reciently adopted a 8 year old meyers parrot with some issues. hatch date 09/04/02. been though a lot of people. she is very skiddish even when i put my hand in but she will step up if i chase her down in her cage and force her. the next few days ill be taking it easy. do some training. i used to help a bird rescue center and have a lot of exp. in training and handling birds and there situations. i just had MY son Cullen in march and im trying to balance meyers cat and baby. Toby is at my mothers for now. hes to loud for the baby. well there is my intro.

Welcome to Missy and Toby. Perhaps we can help you as this is a wonderful forum. The first thing I am addressing is the fact that you are chasing the bird while in the cage. This is one thing we should not do in or out of the cage. Let the bird make her own decisions as to how fast she will bond with you. If she is skittish all the more reason to step back some. Remember she is in a new enviornment with a new flock so she is by nature going to be skittish at first. Sit close to her and open the cage door and just talk or sing or read to her in a calm voice. Keep her fav. treats in your hands when you are near her. Most of all, be very patient with her - it takes time!! You know this as you have bird experience but never never force a bird to do anything unless it is a safety issue.

I really couldn't have said it better myself!

Yes, always take things at birdie's own pace. You never know how long it will take for them to adjust to you, it could be as long as a week or as short as a day. Be patient, it will take time.

Great to have you on board.
SB has given great advise, I would certainly take note.
Each and every bird is so different, let him come out, in his own time. No matter how long it takes, just be patient and preserver.

Welcome! I have a Quaker too-- they're so much fun. Some good advice has already been offered about your new Meyer's parrot.

sorry im just now getting back to yall. my almost 2 month old is doing okay with the birds doesnt bother Cullen. i gave Tweety Bird a chance all day to come out she didnt. my friend that gave her to me came over and got tweety bird out and she finally stepped up and i could pet her back and give her kisses. so im sensing cage aggression and trust issues.

Glad to hear Cullen is well, you coping and the birds are okay.
Tweedy just needs time, must gain your trust.
When sitting with Cullen, sit near her cage, talking and singing to her.
Leave the cage door open, when she feels secure, she will eventually come out, in her own time. Keep doing this daily, routine wise, she will know what to expect.
Be patient and persever.....
Keep us updated okay

i will start holding my son rocking him by the cage in my arms. that is a fantastic idea i dont know why i havent thought of it.trust is a big issue to tweetybird and i got her a couple of new toys just to treat her welcome. i still do no stick my hand in there but i do open her cage door for her to come out everyday all day unless i leave the house. im thinking 8 year old with emotional problems will take for her to step up about 2-3 months.
