Galah Cockatoo, Yellow-naped Amazon, Myers
:grey:Hello-
Just signed up.
Came across this site while researching Fatty Tumors in birds. My Galah, SophieRose has 2 that are getting huge! Already read some posts that have been extremely helpful.
I also have an Amazon, BachBird, and a Myers, Gracie. All can talk.
I got BachBird before he had feathers. Hand-fed/raised. He is 15 years old now. Very verbal with an extensive vocabulary. He laughs (multiple versions), sings, calls each of my dogs (I have 4) by name and mimics their individual barks. He can start them barking, then tells them to hush. Was very sweet as a baby, handled a lot & spent most of the time uncaged. He is now a terrible teenager-seriously vicious & will deliver a nasty bite. He eats only "people food"-no seed.
I got SophieRose right after she was weaned. She was hand-fed by the breeder. Not a big talker, extremely sweet & loving. If I start dancing, she will too. If I stretch my arms out, she opens her wings wide. Just a joy of a parrot. I'm very upset & feel guilty about the tumors. I've had her to a Vet. I'm now looking for more help. They need to be removed. I've worked to change her diet but she is a fussy eater & I have not had a lot of luck at it.
Gracie was a rescue given to me because the owner was going to jail (I don't know what for). She is very sweet and loves to be handled, talks-only I don't exactly know what she is saying since I didn't teach her & it isn't very loud. She doesn't like men at all & will attack & bite if given the chance (I don't know if the previous owner was a man-maybe so & that's why she hates them). She eats both seed & people food.
When I say, people food-I mean fruit (fresh & dried), veggies (raw & cooked), pasta, rice, pizza, nuts, boiled eggs, mashed potatoes, crackers, unsalted chips & pretzels. I try to give a variety.

I am an old lady who now lives a solo life, rarely leaving my house. I'm retired. Was a graphic arts designer, technical illustrator & an electro-mechanical draftsman. Now, I'm into textile arts: quilting (designing & making one-of-a-kind art quilts to sell), spinning, weaving, beading, knitting, crochet. Used to do a lot of stained-glass-even taught others. Starting a new line of making unique skull caps-do wraps, that are jeweled & beaded, to sell. Have to keep active or I'd go insane (at least crazy than I already am! :09:)
Have no children or family, & very few friends. Recently moved to this area & know no one. Don't even know my way around. Not a big deal since I've only left this place once in 9 months. I stay away from people because of past experiences & events that were devastating & life changing.
I chose to join this forum to become a better bird parent and better educated on what others have done that works so I can make my parrots healthier and happier.

Welcome! I am glad you decided to join and have found some helpful information.
We love pictures around here so seeing pics of your flock would be great!
I know fatty tumors are common in some cockatoos and am sorry to hear that you are having to deal with that. Is your Nape male or female?

Welcome!! You won't find a better source of information than right here. Or more loving, caring people either for that matter.

As everybody else has already mentioned pictures are a big hit around here so whenever you get a chance to upload some I know we'd all love to see your happy little family.

Welcome to the forum. Is guess you know the amazon is probably next in line. They too are prone to fatty tumors. I have a 44yr old nape who has one on the side of her face. I've been to many AVs (avian vet) they all say it's benign. Don't worry. I have found i can control it with diet, some what. I still worry when i see it. If i give her too many fats, it seem to show. When i carefully watch her diet ,it seems to shrink. Hope you don't have to do the surgery. We love pixs and vids along with the story to go with it.
