Hello, getting ready for a bird

Hello everyone, I am not a first time bird owner. When i was a younger kid my folks had budgies and Cockatiels but that was awhile ago. I have always wanted a bird but the time was never right. Now I own a home, have a sound proofed basement and would like to get a bird to take care of, play with and incorporate into the family. I always wanted a Senegal since meeting a sweet one in a non-chain pet store about 10 years ago but I was not ready for the commitment.

Now that I have been married, have a home and a family I feel I am ready to commit to a bird. Myself, my wife and my 4 year old have fallen over the moon with a Jenday at the worst place possible (IMHO) to buy an animal, Petco. I know all about the noise but this bird is crazy...he LOVES every human I have seen it come in contact with. My daughter can pet him and he just nibbles lightly at her finger and will perch on her finger, he is 3 months old. He gives kisses (no saliva contact of course) and will shoulder surf with anyone and lie on his back without any issues... I just feel he/she is a rare bird. I am only worried about the noise. So far every time we have been there, it is the other birds that are loud. The Jenday will squawk a little when you first open the cage but as soon as you do, he is totally enthralled with the humans the whole time. Not sure if this is rare or not.

Anyways before we take the plunge we are going to go over to DJ Feathers Aviary in Chantilly, Va to visit some other birds including Senegals (which I've always loved) to make sure we do due care and diligence in our selection. I am not sure it is prudent to just pick a bird without checking out all options and scenarios possible. I did go to another well known area bird seller (Featherheads in Sterling, VA) that I was not really impressed with, sadly to say (it seems all the birds there seem neglected, dirty and not well taken care of, made me sad but that is a whole other story...) But anyways I am definitely going to be a new bird owner soon! I look forward to interacting with those who can help. I am ready! LOL

Welcome! Jendays are known for being loud and sennies for being quieter, but there's always the exception to the rule.

I think it's a good idea to visit different birds and do your research as to what might fit into your family.

Welcome! It's undeniable the Jendays are gorgeous birds. I can look at one all day :), but I'd prefer the Senegal, since I'm biased ;) I have 2 birds in the same family as a Senegal. They're typically known to be fairly quiet (and have a softer voice anyway), and they're capable of being very independent but loving birds.

Welcome!! I'm sure whichever bird you pick will be amazing! Something our realtor told us when we were buying a house (that I've tried to apply to other aspects) was, "If somebody came along and bought the house you were looking at, which one would you be more upset over?"

Welcome to the forum! It definitely sounds like you have done your homework. Any bird you decide on will be a lucky boy or girl!

Hi, I got my little dude (sun conure) at a local shop but I wasnt looking when I found him I just fell for him! I didn't even have the money to get him so worked out a payment plan with the shop that gave me time to do my reasurch. That was seven plus years ago and I'm still so pleased I did it somtimes things happen for a reason if you've found a special little charactor I would snap him up although I understand your hesitation. Good luck :)

Well we visited DJ Feathers Aviary today and got to spend time with just about every type of Parrot you can imagine, it was really nice. We then went to visit Willis at Petco and there is just no comparison. There was only one bird at DJ's that was as even close to him in regards to friendliness right off the bat and that was Black topped Caique's..they were really sweet but not like Willis. We will be putting a down payment on him Weds because we are going to the beach for a week and they will only hold him for a week and a half. When we come back we will go pick him up right away.

I just finished building his main cage. I will post pictures in the Conure forum as soon as we bring him/her home! Hopefully all will go well between now and then!

Just wanted to ad my 2 cents on Featherheads - I emailed them on Thursday about some pricing since there are no prices listed on their website. I received an email in return on Thursday night. Friday I drove down there and when I inquired about the birds I was told that each of the prices was $50 more than I was quoted in the email 18 hours prior. I was told that "the prices went up". I asked that they honor the pricing they gave me and they refused. So, I walked out. Definitely a place to avoid!!

Congrats on your new addition!

Yeah, was not impressed with that place. DJ Aviary in Chantilly seems nicer to me. PM me if you are looking for anything in particular around NoVA. I have seen I think every bird available. LOL
