Wilson- a 15 y/o Blue and Gold Macaw rescue baby. Imported.
Hi! I'm Paige. I'm not that interesting. I'm a girl who plans to lose about a hundred pounds and join the United States Naval Services in 2018. :42: But boy does my bird have a story! He's a fifteen years old Blue and Gold macaw! I got him in 2007 when I was in third of fourth grade, and his bones in his left wing were sticking up out of his wing. He had been left on the door-step of the SPCA, abused, beaten, recently his doctor suggested he may have been attacked by a raccoon or possum (Not beaten by a person or owner.) No one knows. The veterinarian at the animal shelter said Wilson would never walk or fly again, and that he should be put down, but a good friend took Wilson in. and fixed up his leg with patience and love! The vet cleared Wilson to be given to a good home, and he landed with me. My dad flat said no, but when he met the bird, he dang near cried, and took him in. Wilson was aggressive at first, but bonded to me! I put up with his biting, read all the books, and took on hand feeding and giving him water each day. He's less and less aggressive with each day. His bone is no longer sticking out of his wing, and he's had a clean bill of health since 2008!
Here's him at his check-up the other day, being such a good bird, we didn't have to wrap him up!

So yeah. I'm obviously not as experienced as anyone here, so all I want is some help here and there, and to discuss with other bird owners Wilson's behavior, and maybe offer my two cents! Thanks! :blue1:

Aww what a wonderful story! It's so sad what some of these birds go through. I'm so glad he found a good home with you. :) Sounds like he picked himself a good human. ;)
I look forward to seeing your posts and stories about him!

Welcome Paige and Wilson! Wow, what a story you share! Y'know most people would have given up on Wilson, but because you persevered, here he is, a new member of Parrotforums and just as gorgeous as can be. You're both an inspiration to the rest of us. Good luck on your goal of joining the US Naval Service - that's a worthy ambition in anyone's book and I, for one, think you're a very interesting new member. :)

I'd say if you could work with an abused mac when you were in the third or fourth grade you're more than interesting! Most people wouldn't be willing to take on the beak at that age.

Welcome to the Forum, Paige! And thank you so much for sharing your story.

There aren't too many people who would've had the patience, or even desire, to do all that you did for Wilson. Impressive in an adult. Absolutely exceptional in a 3rd or 4th grader!

I look forward to hearing more from you, and seeing more pics if you've got them.

And feel free to ask away with any questions you may have.

That was such a touching story Paige! So glad you were able to give that beautiful bird a good home and show him not all people are bad. Good luck with the Navy and thank you for wanting to volunteer to be a member of the armed forces. I can't speak directly for the Navy (I was prior Air Force and my husband is currently Air Force, my mother was Navy for a couple of years thought), but it is a great experience. You learn so much about yourself and grow so much as a person. Any idea what job you want yet or are you going to give it a couple of years?

I was so young it was like taking in a puppy that bites when excited. I think if I were older when I took him in, I may not have been so lucky as to be hand-feeding him three months into the whole journey. I would be more cautious. I think that I got him so young, and my curiosity more often than not got the best of me is probably why things worked out so well! Thanks! I have a lot of scars, because as everyone here knows Macaws are extremely powerful, but I still have all my digits, so i'm not complaining.

No, but I know the Navy is for me. I've been with JROTC for a year and a half now, and it feels right in my heart and my mind. I've always wanted to be a practicing psychologist. I'm not sure the Navy needs that, or has those types of jobs that need to be fulfilled.

A few more pictures. I've cut myself out of these because I've lost weight and dyed my hair since the pictures and just looking at them flips my stomach :/

He is a very pretty boy, and he's very charming once he warms up to you, a little birdie casanova!

That sounds great! Are you planning on commissioning? I would think that the Navy has a mental health dept. I know the Air Force does. Do lots of research on it. I'm actually calling my brother tomorrow, because he just recently decided he doesn't want to go to college but enlist instead. he just graduated this year, so we're just trying to give him as much information as possible. I know I can't help with Navy specifics, but if you ever have any general questions about the military let me know.
