Hi names Eric and I figured i would sign up here just in case I needed help with my families new member, a blue and gold macaw. My family has always taken in pets that people don't want anymore or pets that simply need a home. We have had all types of pets from basic cats and dogs to exotic pets like iguanas and peacocks to local wild life like squirrels and racoons. Some come then get re located others just become part of the family......most become part of the family lol. Now you know a bit about me and my family animal past.....

We recently took in a blue and gold macaw who needed a home. The person got it and realized its quite noisy, so they wanted it gone. So of course we brought it home (no clue the gender) as that was not a good home for it. They told us that before them it lived with them, an older couple had multiple macaws. The wife left for some reason but did not take the birds so the husband had them, and did not like them clearly as the bird likes to say "Shut the f*** up". So this macaw, assuming because of this prefers women and while it will eat from your hand does not want to be touched. It will get close to you and show bird signs it wants affection and to be pet, just does not want hands touching it and will act like it will bite though it does not bite hard.

So my question, I have had a tough time finding good methods to make it more comfortable with men and hands so it can be brought out of its cage more and have a better life as it is fairly young so it will out live my parents and thus me resuming responsibility. Figured i'd start now in establishing a bond and making it friendlier. So yes what are some good methods to let the macaw know men are not all bad guys and hands are not scary. Any tips regarding its care or toys or anything is also very appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Birdman should be around soon to help. If you search the forums you will probably be able to find some of his posts about dealing with macs until he comes along.
