Getting back to keeping birds

Good evening all

I am looking into getting a pet bird after moving into the city, having got uni and professional qualifications out the way.

I was fortunate to grow up with parents that catered to every whim. Which resulted in 2 pairs of african greys, 1 pair mollucan cockatoos, 1 pair leadbeater cockatoo, a pair of blue and gold macaws and a pair of solomon island eclectus. All were successfully bred and hand reared. Now I am looking at either the african grey or the sulphur crested cockatoo.

That is a far cry from my parents who evicted my flock of small birds. Keep us updated!

Cheers Guys, I can't wait to get a bird but will bide my time choosing the correct species. If all goes to plan the bird will be coming to work with me on a daily basis.

With regards to my original birds all died in an outbreak of Newcastles disease, bar one Molluccan, that we think broke out on our neighbours chicken farm. This happeneed whilst we were on vacation and the poor gardener was beside himself with worry.

That's terribly sad! I hope you find the right bird. With all your experience, maybe you should look into adopting from a rescue. There are lots of birds out there that need good experienced homes! I'm sure there are several in your area.

I have been looking into taking into taking in a rescue bird but not understand the ownership around them. If I found the right bird without hesitation I would be them the full value of the bird but don't like the ownership of the bird isn't yours as I would keep the bird for life.

Is this common practise for rescue birds or not. Any advice would be welcome.

I think you're talking about fostering as opposed to adoption. Some rescues offer fostering (which is temporary) and adoption (which is permanent.) And then some places allow you to foster as a try out to see if you and the bird click and if you do you can then adopt.
