- Pierre-40-45 yr old double yellow headed amazon inherited from Mom. I grew up with him.
Hi Everyone,
I recently inherited/rescued my feathered sibling of approximately 43-44 years of age. We always had more pets than everyone else growing up but it escalated in recent years and when Mom got sick he was instinctively the first thing I removed from the house. This bird has been through a lot and I want to do what I can to ensure that the next 40+ years are better than the last 20.
I have a TON of questions and concerns which is why I'm here.
Because of what he's been through and the fact that I've had to have a bird-friendly friend bird sit quite a bit in HER home while I deal with Mom's transition I have hesitated to have his wings clipped or a vet eval just yet.
Because I fear that it may just be too much too soon.
He was docile the first week and let me put my hand in and out of the cage(as always-I grew up with him and he'd sit on my arm...)
to feed special treats in a stainless bowl but then he bit me and escaped...
I don't need to explain to this crowd how he returned to his cage on his own terms.............
My main concern now is whether he is molting or seriously ill. Both are entirely possible. The space between his wings on his back is hollow... I can see what appears to be new feather growth as opposed to down between but considering the conditions I pulled him out of and the fact that I won't have a travel cage until next week I'm seeking some insight.
I'm not entirely new to DYHAmazons as I know him and he knows me but it's been a while since I've witnessed a molt.......
thanks,
Audrey
