Hi there!
I am the proud owner of many animals, most of whom are rescues!

I own three dogs, 3 cats, 1 GCC, 1 Senegal, 1 lovebird, 3 budgies, share a sulphur crested cockatoo. I also rescue, rehabilitate and rehome birds, some of whom land up living with my husband and I for the rest of their lives.

Right - firstly the dogs!

Zac - 5 year old wolf hybrid. OMW - what a hand full! He is huge, (65Kg's) and stands hip height to me. I am definitely the alpha female of the pack, and he is my Velcro dog. Never leaves me for an inch when I am home, and thank the Lord for that. He has already defended me twice, both times home invasions by unwanted persons. Nuff said. The employment situation in SA is very bad, and getting worse by the minute. I understand the desperation, and my heart goes out to the unemployed, but there is no reason to turn to crime! Zac is definitely a one person dog/wolf (both granddams are pure Alaskan timberwolfs, paternal grandfather malamute/timber wolf and maternal grandfather is a Oldenhill german shepherd (oldstyle - with a straight back). I will not say that I own him, rather he owns me! He drives my hubby crazy - as he will not take any notice of anything my hubby has to say! LOL! And oh boy does he shed!!!!

Tammy - 13 year old maltese poodle, inherited from my mom after she passed away. Sweetest little thing, with a very annoying little hoarse yap!!

Maggie - 13 year old Jack Russel/Toy Pom cross, rescue. My little eat everything walking coffee table! She was the runt of the litter, and when I got her at 7 weeks old she still did not eat on her own. I had to teach her to eat by hand feeding her.

Cats

The Ginga Ninja - 4 year old tom cat - bought as a kitten on the side of the road for R10 (about a dollar) in shocking condition! Even though I bought him, it was definitely a rescue!

Amelia (grey and white tabby) - rescue. She was 6 months old when we got her as a foster cat from the rescue centre down the road, and it took a week of me sitting in our bedroom with her before she eventually accepted that we were never going to harm her and started coming out underneath the cupboards. She is definitely a character - she thinks she is a dog! She licks you when she is loving, jumps up against you, wags her tail when she is happy, and when the dogs bark at the postman and dustbin men, she runs to the gate to go and see what the fuss is all about!

Lucy (calico, 18 months) - rescue. My daughter found her underneath her car as a tiny little five week old kitten, and brought her home to us.

Parrots

Jake 11 year old GCC :green2:- Rescue. Jake was a hand raised little GCC who was bought with his sister by a couple, and then left on his own in a room and only fed and watered, while his sister got all the attention. When I got him he shrieked the roof down all day and would bite!!!! He still bites, but now I can touch him and the shrieking has stopped. The only people he really adores is my daughter and her fiancé, Aimee has never been bitten by Jake and can turn him into a pretzel, with him asking for more!

Max - 4 year old Senegal:green1: hand raised by me. My little sweetums, loves to cuddle up to me, purrs like a cat, talks the hind leg of a donkey. She adores Ninja the tom cat and he adores her back. Ninja often sleeps on top of her cage, and she will groom him the whole time he is there.

Chippy - the little lovebird :orange:- rescue. When I got Chippy more than a year ago, she was totally bare, the only feathers were right on top of her head, and terrified! She is now fully fledged, and has calmed down a lot, does not hide inside her box anymore when I am in the bird room, and she chirps and talks continuously to Max. She had a mate when we got her, but he was a total escape artist, and in spite of us having put small locks on all the hatches of their cage, he still escaped! He was the culprit in plucking Chippy! Once we got them, I changed their diet and gave them mineral blocks, and the plucking got less. I had no idea what type of lovebird she was, and once the feathers started growing, I realized that she was a peach faced lovebird, and Georgie was a masked fischer lovebird.
We were never able to find Georgie, and little Chippy is now the happiest chirpiest prettiest little girl!

Bertie - greater sulphur crested cockatoo - shared. Yep, that's right shared. He does not belong to me, but spends a lot of time with me when his owners travel. He adores me, loves being petted, and I have taught him a lot of words and sentences. Loves sitting on my lap in the evening while we watch TV, and does not mind sharing my lap with two cats. It gets crowded, I can tell you. His owners keep him up till they go to bed, and keep him covered until 9 am in the morning, when they get up. So if I try to get him to go to bed before we do, we have very loud screeching complaints coming from the bird room. So to give the other birds peace to sleep, we keep him with us until we go to bed. Once we start switching off lights, then he knows it is bed time and goes to sleep quite happily. He is also a passionate kisser, and when he is on my shoulder will constantly kiss me! The strange thing is that he does not do that to his owners.

I also have 3 little budgies in a small aviary outside on our veranda in a very sheltered spot, but they were not hand raised, and are a little wild. I cannot touch them, but they call to me every time they see me, as I am the one that gives them treats and food.

This menagerie gets on very well - the whole lot mix and mingle without a problem. they all more or less grew up together, and they all form a pack. The parrots (Max and Bertie) can walk on the floor without any of the cats or dogs even looking at them.

Oh, before I forget , I also have a husband, a son and a daughter:eek:! My Son Dominic lives very far away from home - Melbourne Australia, and has just recently got married. My daughter Aimee lives just around the corner 2 minutes away and is getting married in October. My hubby is an officer in the South African Navy and is the most patient person I have ever met. HE LOVES ME!!! Why do I say that? Well Colin grew up in a family that had only had one dog, and he certainly did not know what hit him when he married me! But he puts up with my animal mania???? and helps me with everything. He has also discovered that he loves cats, and cannot resist them. Birds he tolerates, and will feed them. He desperately wants Bertie to come to him, but unfortunately Bertie is a ladies man!

Well that is me in not so much of a nut shell!

I am looking forward to meeting all of you!

Michelle

Welcome aboard, sounds like you'll fit right in around here ! ! !

A lot of the inmates around here dote on pictures, while others of us may not be as enthused with our own photographic abilities, but I'm sure you'll get asked.....anyway, hope you enjoy your stay.....

Was in your fair country a number of years ago...was in P'town.....

Hi Weco, thanks for the welcome.

I shall certainly place pictures, but I am posting this on my laptop, and unfortunately my pc has all the pics, and hubby is working on it at the moment. But will definitely place pics.

There's a relatively small pic limit on here (space conservation), so you might want to post to a free pic hosting site and just post the links to the forum, that way you won't have to keep unloading & removing pics.....
