Hello,
My name is Robin and I am owned by an Eclectus parrot named Kiala, A Caique named Tiki and I am babysitting a Severe Macaw named Melia. Melia's Mom and Dad, the human kind are truck drivers and they plan to take her on the road with them. I am babysitting while her Mom completes her training. I've never had contact with a Macaw so we are feeling things out slowly. She is a good girl, friendly and I can tell her Mom has taken good care of her. I would like some advice on what kind of carrier to get for a Macaw with a long tail. Melia will need a carrier when she is taken from the truck to a hotel. They also apparently have showers and such for truckers on the road.

Today is my birthday and I am celebrating by have a session with an animal communicator to see what is on Kiala's mind. Tiki and Melia will be welcome to chime in. Kiala is 22 years old and we are his first and forever home (we hope), Tiki is 16 years old and I don't know how old Melia is. This is her second home that I know of.

Nice to meet you all.

Regards,
Robin

Welcome to the forum! Sounds like you have a nice flock:) We'd love if you shared some photos.

Sounds like Melia the macaw has a fun life ahead:) I got to know a couple who traveled in their RV (they sold things at flea markets, and would show up at our local one every summer;)) with their parrots, and the birds just loved life on the road. 2 macaws (scarlet and B&G) and a CAG, and they were just the happiest birds. Hope her humans do well with their training!

Hi Robin! Is Rescue in the Sierras? I'm also from CA, but i'm on the Central Coast. Your flock sounds very nice! I just got this backpack/carrier for my 2:
Celltei Pak-o-Bird - the high quality light-weight carrier for your birds and parrots
They are expensive, but extremely well made! If you look on the site, you will see how they have one for macaws and their long tails. We use it to take them to the vet, go on hikes, walks, car rides...it also buckles into a car seat with a seatbelt.

I look forward to seeing pics and learning more about your flock!

Here, i made a video for you! just now

[ame="http://youtu.be/DN0RI-UiNgc"]How to place a Macaw inside a Carrier - YouTube[/ame]

This is what i use for my Blue and Gold Macaw - Its pretty sturdy and a great size.. Some of it is plastic, If your macaw is a plastic Biter, just buy some bitter apple spray and spray the pieces (S)he is chewing on and it works like a charm. Theyre not that expensive, and are nice looking..

Remember, Tails bend!! But the carrier i have is long enough that her tail does not touch the back.

I don't have the one with the open top but im sure you can decide what you prefer

The easiest way to put them inside is through the front door (not top)

(Gosh i hate my voice) (And maybe i should have got dressed. oh well you get the idea!)

Step one: pick up macaw
Step two: Hold feet and flip birdie upside down.
Step three: Insert bird head first and upside down and lay on its back,
by the time the bird flips back over the door will be secured!!!

2-door kennel | Petmate

For pets up to 20lbs: 24.05 X 16.76 X 14.5; available in pearl ash blue and metallic pearl tan

Welcome to the forum Robin!

I'm interested in hearing what the animal communicator had to say!

We have a pak-o-bird by Celltei and a traditional travel cage. I find the pak-o-bird is excellent for day trips and walks/hiking. I prefer a little bit bigger and a little more traditional for overnight+ trips, though (the cage). Kiwi's travel cage is OLD and definitely not made anymore, but Kings cages makes a similar more modern (and much nicer-looking than ours;)) version:

Honestly, he (Kiwi) doesn't seem to care either way. He likes both his backpack and travel cage. He traveled cross country in his cage when we moved, and comes all over with me in his carrier. He actually goes and play/nap in both of his own free will, despite having a nice big cage and play stand (go figure:rolleyes:):
