Hi, am new to the site today. My mum has an African Grey parrot who doesn't like females!! only likes to be handled by males.

I am looking to buy a parakeet that needs to be hand reared so I can get him/her used to be handled daily and teach it to talk.

I wondered what parakeet would be recommended and would be grateful for advice offered prior to going to buy one.

many thanks

Karen :)

Hi Karen, welcome to the forums & there should be some budgie lovers pop-in around here to answer your question.....sorry, have never had any experience with budgies!

It is not uncommon for some companion birds to have a gender preference, but often a bird prefers the person who feeds it & gives it the most attention, but not always, as is proven by your mom's grey.....

Hi and welcome. I used to own budgies/parakeets. I would recommend getting a male if you are looking at budgies/parakeets. You would have to have it dna tested to make sure you get a male though, as you can't tell the sex of a young one. The males will usually talk MUCH more than the females. There are other many other species of parakeets also, and others can add suggestions on that end.

Hi all,

I would like to have in my home a parrot or parakeet that is friendly in order to be able to handle him/her, train to talk and that is comfortable playing with toys or just being on floor or on shoulder.

I have been looking at ring necked parakeet and wondered if this would be a good choice or whether anyone with more experience of parrots could recommend a particular breed. I do work in the day so will only have time in evenings and on weekends.

Any suggestions would be welcomed.

many thanks

Karen :)

I love the Monk Parakeet! They are great birds! Maybe one of them? They are good talkers and they are quite sweet! I always fall in love when I see one! :)

A ringneck is probably a bit of a handful, so I'd probably 2nd the monk/quaker parakeet or maybe a conure of some type, like a green cheek...but I'm way biased towards them. Budgies are also great, but they are actually more difficult to get and keep tame in my experience.

Love the green cheeks if you are willing to take time every day to be with them. They love being part of a family.
