Hello everyone! I currently have 3 birds. One Nanday Conure, one Lovebird, and a newly acquired Military Macaw! He is my first macaw.

The nanday is around 11 years old and is dna sexed male. I do not know the age or sex of my lovebird. The Military is 12 and I have been told he is male. Although he hasn't been sexed.

My military and I are in the process of bonding. He does not stay in a cage. He has his own bedroom. For now I am keeping everyone totally seperate until MoMo (the Military Macaw) can get to the vet.

I do wonder if anyone has any cheap ideas for things he can chew up? He does paper towels, kleenex, paper, and nuts. But Im wondering about crayola colored pencils? Too unsafe? Any ideas or suggestions appreciated!

Welcome to the forum and congrats on Momo:) Military macaws are BEAUTIFUL. If I ever got a second bird, they would be high up there on my list. We'd all love to see photos of Momo and the rest of your flock:)

As for safe things to chew up, office supple would not be one of them. Probably not going to kill him if he accidentally got one, but shouldn't be offered as a toy. I know many people with XL birds buy untreated wood 2x4s and saw them up for cheap shreddable material;) Theres a whole DIY and Toys section on the forum, so I'd suggest you check those out for even more ideas:)

Welcome to the forum! I'd love to see photos of your flock :D

Cardboard, and as said above wooden 2 by 4 sawed to size are great. Buying unthreaded wood is cheap and safe since you know the exact type of wood and that it's untreated.

Agreed - Un treated pine is a great way to go, You can get different color kool aid packets, unsweetened, and make a watery paste with it, nd color ll the blocks different colors. this is also tastey and he will love to chew it up. Drill holes and string it together with twine or pure nickel chain. you can buy the chain and hooks from bird stores, online or local if you have em.

Oh, I forgot to say congratulations :) I love Militaries, they're so quirky ^^ They need lots of beaky things to do, as you seem to know already, one cool thing you can get are coconut shells. you can get halves drill some holes in it, stuff them with bird safe confetty and nuts and dried fruits and tie them together with twine after you stuff them, and your bird will forage and crack them open ^^

Foraging is great for birds, it keeps them active and happy and it is something they do in the wild.

The coconut shell is a good idea! I've seen them at the store. Would getting him a fresh coconut and cracking it open for him be a good idea? Or no?

Thank you so much for the suggestions and reply! I don't have a lot of bird friends. It's nice to know there's people willing to give info and help!

Thanks for the suggestions! Would any kind of cardboard work? I have a lot of shipping boxes. It would be a great way to recycle! Of course I would remove any tape or labels or anything with ink and all that.

I cut up shipping boxes all the time, just be cautious of what was shipped. I avoid areas that have dye on them. My birds adore cardboard, but in spring I leave it out to avoid breeding behavior lol

I don't see why not! You could even let him try to crack it open ^^ The juice is a natural laxative, but im not sure if that applies to parrots. I'll have to look that up. The flesh wont hurt them(Though i don't know about any nutritional value ill have to look that up too, i just know it wont hurt them), and it'd be fun for him, After he's done with it you can carve out the flesh (Careful!) and use the shell :)
