Kiwi - Alex
Hi all

I have recently homed an Alex 7 weeks we have had him. He was born 2013 he has a ring but don't know exactly how old he is. My daughter has named him kiwi and he is adorable. I have tons of questions and would be very grateful for any advice. He was previously owned but he has settled right in with us. He has some feather loss on his belly near his braclet (which drives him crazy) and I'm not sure if it has been due to plucking or another reason. I never ever see him plucking or are there masses of feathers just the odd little grey/white wispy one floating around that I chase for 30 min 😃. I'm not to good on these forums but would love to post some pics of our new family member. I've managed to display him as my profile pic I think :30:

Welcome to the forums, hope you enjoy your stay.....

Though I'm not an Alex owner, there are a number active around here, who will probably chime in later.....

Chime. :D

Congratulations on your excellent choice of an Alexandrine as a companion bird! They really are among the most beautiful of bird species (at least, I think they are), they're highly intelligent and great talkers. Oh, and they're utterly hilarious, once they get their bearings in your home and know what the boundaries are. My Barney and Madge send merry squawks to their new friend, Kiwi. Looking forward to those pics of him! :)

Kiwi is beautiful! I also love Alexes, and have a 12 year old named Xander.
If his ring seems to be bothering him, your avian vet can remove that for you.
My Xander loves veggies and fruits, and will basically eat anything I put in front of him. He does not particularly like to be scritched, but loves to sit on our shoulder and chat with us, and play peek a boo.
Looking forward to seeing more pictures of Kiwi and hearing more about him:)
Glad you joined us!

Thanks for the link. I have uploaded some pics of my little fella. Can't wait for you guys to tell me what you think of him. I'm a new bird keeper have been doing list of reading up on him ect but any advice is VERY WELCOME He had previous owners who couldn't keep him anymore as they were going into an elderly home ? (not known to me I saw him the store and just could not resist his charming little face) the rest is history. I will try and get a pick of his belly and post on appropriate page.

Kiwi is just stunning! And that stand you made is awesome! What did you use? I would love directions on that:)

Hi terry. Thanks for kiwis compliments. The stand was made from a plywood base edged with 3" architrave then covered in sand paper A 50mm Central post with smaller size ones drilled and screwed to it (counter sunk) . Different size perches for comfort ect We coverd the center with rope for him to climb and also cover any fixings. The ladders were home made too and edged with rope too. He loves to walk up his ladders cool to see ! He loves it and is a different bird on there. He can be cage aggressive ? Think this is acceptable from what I've read. It took a couple of hours to make and is far better than anything I have seen to buy. We also have made him a table training stand lol ... Mmmm will see how that goes. From my pics terry can u see a faint black ring appearing or do u think I'm seeing things ? ... My prince maybe a princess .. My partner thinks kiwi is completely spoilt... Thinking of the next project already :))))))

I envy you the cuddles! If I tried to do that with Barney or Madge, they'd bite me and then have a squawking fit for ten minutes. They DO NOT like to be cuddled like that. Sigh...

I think I do see a ring starting:) From my understanding, most males really start to show between 18 months and 2 years of age, so my guess is that you will start to see more of it as a little more time passes, and another moult or 2. We just got Xander back in Feb. so he already had his ring. I think it would have been awesome to watch it come in.

@Davidcsky - I totally agree, Alexes are amazing birds, they sure make it easy to love them with their wonderful personalities:)
