helloo i have a parrot who has balancing problems.I have looked at her foot and it does not seem swollen or broken. As she moves around it seems as if she can't get her leg up when it slips off her perch or when she flies to another perch and her foot doesn't connect to where she is going. She then looses her balance and either falls to the floor of her cage or she needs to manoeuvre to get onto the perch she was going for.She has a ladder in her cage and when she fell to the floor she went to climb up the stairs and she couldn't lift her leg as she was climbing the ladder. Her leg was dragging behind.I took her to the vet but they have told me that she might have a cold and they gave me some medicine with vitamin B that i should give her whit water.I would like to ask if this is true can cold cause her leg not function or its something else. :yellow2:

Is it possible that she broke/sprained her leg?

Did you go to an Avian Vet? I feel like if it wasn't a certified vet for birds, they decided to do the easiest thing and determine it as a cold and send you off with false information and unneeded medicine.

Try moving all her perches down to the lowest level so that the falls don't seriously hurt her. This also helps with having her relax her leg and put less stress on it. I'd also pad the bottom of the cage so she doesn't constantly have to slam into a metal grate.
What type of parrot is she and is she clipped? If she is small enough, you can make a rehabilitation tank for the time as she recovers. Though this should only be done if you find out it's a leg injury that requires a splint or cast. It makes it easier to monitor and theres no climbing or risk of falling involved. The only con is that it might become warm in there, but as long as it's not in the sun or sunlight it should be okay.

Hello Kristijan, welcome to the forums.....what species of parrot are we talking about? Has your bird laid any eggs lately?

From what you have mentioned, it could be several things and off-hand, it might be a nerve problem, but none of us here are veterinarians.....the reason I asked about egg laying is I once had a cockatiel that had trouble passing an egg and had similar problems of not being able to perch properly, but I do not know if lack of vitamin B would cause the symptoms you describe.....gently feel her stomach, feeling for a possible egg that may be in there.....

Are you in Eastern Europe? I ask because you really do need to find a veterinarian that sees primarily avian patients, but I also realize that even regular veterinarians are hard to find in some areas.....

Good luck.....

hello again thank you for your answers.I would like to add some things.I live in Macedonia, a country located in the central Balkan peninsula in Southeast Europe. We have a lots of vets and also one veterinarian hospital where i have brought my parrot.Sadly our veterinarians are not so good especially with small animals not many people in my country bring their pets to vets (who can treat only cats and dogs). So I've decide to ask for some help from you.My parrot is Small Parakeets which I think its a girl (one other thing that our vets cant tell you).I do not think that her leg is broken because i have tried to move it I've also give her a couple of massages. Her leg when i touch it it looks fine it can move in circles and everything, she react normal she can feel that i touch her but she didn't scream i don't think she feels any pain when I've touch it.To describe it literally it looks like when we have some cramp. She eats and drink and sleep normal. She is also 4 years old and she had never been in any touch with another parrot. I post some links hope you can see her

Is it possible she got her foot caught in something? I brought home a new toy last week and my parakeet immediatly got his toe stuck in it. Then he got traumatized by me trying to remove it, afraid of my hand now. It was just a little slot the bell hung from but he really struggled around when he was trapped. Something like that could easily have injured his leg. Tendon or nerve damage isn't as obvious as a broken bone. Might be hard to diagnose.

Oops boy cere is bluish in color while females are beige brownish. I have had birds for 30 years and never have seen this problem. It almost seems like a nerve issue. How long has this been going on? Also she does need to be clipped but not to the point she fails like a stone! Leave a few flight feathers so she can glide. Be careful not to trim any blood feathers!. As one person advised she definitely needs a cage/perch modification . I would also put a soft towel on the bottom of her cage. Something her toenails won't get caught in. Trim her nails slightly too if needed. I use an emery board on mine so I don't get to short and make them bleed. If she was egg bound she would be acting sick. I hope you can find a good vet I know they are hard to find. I have to drive 1 hour to mine. Maybe even talk to a good breeder. Good luck I hope it's nothing serious!! Will be thinking of you and your little girl

I noticed a red spot on her right foots toe nail. What might that be? Hopefully just foot! How old is she? Looks very young if so you might not be able to tell the sex until she's a little older but I honestly think its a baby girl!

The red spot looks like blood in the nail. My bully has light or clear toe nails and if he's bumped, twisted or caught one on something, sometimes I see it darken due to bruising. The vein in the nail breaks and some blood ends up in the toe nail. Is it possible your parakeet bumped or caught a toe on something?

Hey Kristijan. I'm from Albania, nice to meet another Balkan.

My parakeet started doing the same thing. Since I couldn't take him to a proper vet (much like your situation) I decided to do things from home. Obviously, I didn't know what was wrong with his foot. He just started favoring it and wasn't able to use it so well. I placed him in a small cage with one perch that was right next to his food and water. This way, he didn't move around much and was able to let his injured foot heal. A blue mark remained on his foot, but he regained full use in two weeks.

If you can't take your parakeet to an avian vet, then just try to let her injured foot heal by not letting her use it too much.

Hope things turn out OK with her~

Hello again i would like to thank you all for your feedback's. My bird is getting better. I do rearrange the stuff in the cage so she could move easier. I have also continued to give her the medicine that the vet prescribe it. Luckily after two day i could see an improvement in her standing. Now she is not completely cured but its almost possible for her to do everything whit the leg. I thing the problem was some nerve damage or some sprain. Now she is better. P.S.I wold like to say about that picture with that red dot on her nail is taken a long time ago and is red nail polish she love's her mani - pedi, and her nails are always cut properly.
