Hello from Upstate NY

I am new to the parrot world. But have been doing quite a bit of research on the adoption of one. I have read a number of books, watched countless YouTube videos, and search various websites. I have always been interested in having a companion parrot and now that my life has stability (graduated from college, bought a house, got married, and have a job I love) I would like to make a parrot addition to the family.

I was planning on contacting a local parrot rescue in my area about an adoption. But I found a woman that is looking to rehome her 8 year old African Grey Parrot.

I am very interested in her Grey, she seems well natured from the numerous questions I have asked. The woman is in no hurry to find a home as she just planning for her retirement in 1 to 2 years.

I realize that Greys are not always recommended for a first time parrot Mommy, but I believe that she will make a great fit with our family, I have read several books specific to the African Grey. I also have a great suppose system with my friend who is a parrot rehabilitator.

Now my question is; she is re homing her with a large cage (2x3x5) toys, and play stand. She is asking $750. Is that a reasonable fee?

I understand e inital cost of Grey, cage, and toys in considerable.

Not sure about New York prices but Congo African Grey's in Oregon go for around $600.00 to $1500.00 for just the bird (depending on age and where you buy it). A cage would be another $400.00 to $800.00 depending on which cage you choose. In my opinion the cage the bird is coming with seems a bit small for a grey. My Amazon is in a larger cage than that.

I'm sure people on the forum with more experience will give you better advice.

It sounds like you've done a lot of research and given a lot of thought to the African Grey, so I think you are right, it will be a challenge, but the Grey could be a really good fit.

I agree with Amanda, I would definitely get a larger cage. $750. sounds very reasonable for the bird alone.

Thank you everyone. I am currently exchanging emails with the present owner. She is now decided weather I would b a good home for her Grey to go to.

I am a little concerned in that she won't think so because I have 2 cats, I haven't heard back from her since I told her that.

You might need to clarify and expand on your plans on how to safely house a bird and cat/s in the same house. Or it might be because she's busy, or like me-who replies a day to a week later by accident (oops).
