"Albert" - Female Red Bellied Parrot - 1y3m (Oct 8th, 2014), "Martha" - Unknown Yellow-Sided GCC - 11m (Feb 13th 2015)
Hello everyone,

I am the very happy owner of a nearly 13 week old Red Bellied Parrot named Albert (the breeder is quite certain he's male, but I suppose I won't find out til his first molt).

Leading up to getting him, I spent months reading nearly every book I could find regarding parrot keeping, as well as Poi-specific books. I am very well versed in all of the "technical" aspects of parrot keeping, but of course in practice it's quite a bit different.

By now, I've had him for about 3.5 weeks, and have been handfeeding him for the entire duration. An avian vet locally has helped me through the weaning process, however it's slow going.

Unfortunately, his parents were young and only had a two-egg clutch, of which he was the only chick born (the other egg did not hatch). Lacking the nest competition, he is a much slower weaner. He is eating lots of veg, and quite likes snap peas, carrots, broccoli, and green beans. He also eats cauliflower, cilantro, parsley, and cooked lentils, but with less frequency. He hates fruit or any juicy/sticky item, and has refused nearly every parrot-friendly fruit, as well as applesauce & bird gloop. He is eating Harrison's Super Fine pellets, and has recently started enjoying the Coarse sized pellets as well.

He had his first vet visit the day after I received him from the breeder (by plane), and found he had a minor fungal infection with a fecalgram. He has been on 2 weeks of his water being cut with 1/100 Apple Cider Vinegar as per the vet, and I am awaiting results on another fecalgram any day now. I suspect however that he will need to be put on medication.

Albert's daytime/sleeping cage is 24x18x32 with variative perch sizes. He seems to favor a small-size rope perch, and a natural perch made of twisty wood. This room has a window (the cage is not in the sun, he has an Avian Sun UVA/UVB lamp over the cage), but due to it being frigidly cold here (Canada), I have an oil-filled radiator heater keeping his room at a consistent 24 degrees celcius (75f), as well as a baby humidifier keeping the room at 40%-45%. I would prefer it above 50%, however it is so very dry here in the winter, and I would need a much larger humidifier. Albert is kept in his own room with a radio/mp3 player during the day because we also have 2 cats that have free reign of most of the house.

Albert also has a night/weekend cage (28x24x39) in our entertainment room where the family hangs out when we are home. He was okay spending some time in this cage the first few weeks, however in the last week he dislikes it immensely and just wants to hang out on the desk perch beside my computer, or the table perch on the coffee table. He generally gets about 2-3 hours of out of cage time a night on weekdays, and 6 hours on weekends.

Albert sleeps 11 hours a night on weekdays and 12 hours a night on weekends.

He has been a bit fussy the last couple days, but I'm hoping it's nothing medical.

And finally, pictures!

Well some good news, Alberts fecalgram came back with flying colors (ew) and he is good for pos and neg bacteria counts, and is fungus free. He's starting to eat alot more on his own, but he's still on 3 feedings so far.

I'm pretty happy I've so far avoided all pitfalls associated with being a first time hand-feeder, slow crop, burned crop, aspiration, etc. If nothing else, he's just slooooooooowww.

That said, he's flying great, though he did tear up a few tail feathers on Monday when I was at work. I added some new toys to his cage yesterday and he's been good the last few days. Breaks my heart watching him on the baby monitor when I'm at work though, especially when he peeps for food!

That right there is one of THE sweetest and most caring things I've read in quite a while. :) NNNAAWW!!!

What great news about Albert's fecal (yeah, not particularly a yummy subject, is it :32:)!

He'll wean on his own terms, no doubt about it. Enjoy the baby stage as long as you can. :D

Update:

So Albert is down to one feeding a day (night).

I was able to start the weaning process by offering Nutriberries, along with multiple different pellet types, and started feeding him 50% ground pellets (Harrison's)50% Kaytee Exact Formula+water (or maybe he just started on his own, birds are a mystery).

Now I'm not sure, but when I feed him at night, I generally top him up to 140 grams (usually ~10-11ccs). In the AM after a poop, he's ~131. I leave him some veg and pellets before I leave for work, and he's generally about 121 when I get home (4:30ish). I know he eats, because I see him do it a couple times a day on cam, though usually not for very long. When I get home, he gets brought to his playgym and he will eat a nutriberry and a bit of Harrison's, and top up to ~129 before his night feeding.

He seems to favor Zupreem Fruit more than anything else. I worry that a dyed pellet will compromise my ability to monitor his poop, but at the same time I want him to be eating to fullness.

Should I just be giving him Zupreem until he finishes weaning if that is what he prefers, and then try to do a full Harrison's conversion later? Or is his weight acceptable and just focus on what I've been doing?

EDIT: Video of a sleepy bird.

What a cutie! I have no experience with weaning a bird, but others should be along shortly

Such a cutie! I have no experience with handfeeding, but many others here do. Sounds like you know what you're doing though.
Albert seems like a good healthy weight at that age. My Robin is a male RB, and he's a tiny little guy. I've had him for 20 years since he was just weaned, and he's always been about 113-119.

Alright, Albert update!

16 weeks old today, and he has been fully weaned for almost 6 days! I had to convert him onto Top's pellets because he's poopooing the Harrison's, though now he's eating both.

He's still picky sometimes and begs for Zupreem (sugar!) and Nutriberries, but I've started offering them both as treats and it's helping his clicker training along. I think he's getting a bit pudgy.

Here's a pic of him after a light misting. He's a moistbird.

He's at 125 after his morning poop pretty solidly for the last week.

His breast sticks out a bit around his keel, but I'm more joking than anything, just concerned about giving him too much sugary food.

Oh! Albert reminds me of my 20 year old Robin when he was a young boy :). Robin's a small guy. He's only 119-125g as an adult.

Looking forward to more updates! Yay, he's weaned! Is he cuddly (does he accept being handled all over)?

He does, though he has to be in the mood for skritches, but likes them on his head, face, neck and under the wings.

He hates the heck out of his harness though. It's going to be slow going, but spring is 3-4 months out up here in Canada anyway, so I have time!

Good to start them with the harness at this age. Robin freaks at the sight of it, and Griffin being near a year old is probably past that stage too. Poi's tend to freak out extra easily by nature, so it pays to get them used to a wide variety of experiences at this age.

Lol, Charlie's first sight of a harness was at a year old. You can still pull it off. [emoji3]

I've never tried with him, but I know some birds are definitely more open to it and less freaked out than others. What I REALLY want for Griffin is one of those hoodie sweatshirts! I keep hesitating ordering it for fear of what if he just won't do it, then I'll be disappointed and have wasted money.

Albert update (also woo thanks for voting him the winner this month!): He's starting to try and mimic speech (so early for a Red Belly!) but most makes little robot noises.

He's 100% on board with a pellet diet, and has even started eating bird gloop! His diet becomes more variative by the day, but he has very bulky poops. Is this common in weaned birds?

Despite me turning him around many times, he continues to fall asleep with his tail in his playgym water dish. Weird bird.
